Windows ME is the latest version of Windows 4 (4.90 actually). It is the
latest (and should be the last) of the Win95 series. The merging of
Win9x and WinNT was supposed to have occurred about two years ago.
Windows 2000 is the latest version of Windows NT (version 5). Win2k was
also about two years late.
These values are stored in the registry, and used by applications to
determine which version of the OS is running.
