If money is a large factor then get the A600, but as you point out you intend
to get a CPU upgrade and a tower so you will be spending good cash, so go
for the superior machine - the A1200. Besides that, there is only one
accelerator available for the A600 (the Viper 630) AFAIK, but there are more
options for an A1200. The A1200 is already an upgrade on the A600, with at
least a 68020 compared to the 68000 in the A600 (which is the same as the

You seem to be planning to instal your Amiga in a PC tower, which could mean
a bit of adapting to do. It would be better to think about an Amiga tower
designed for the A1200. (More dollars). But a tower is not necessary if all
you want is a CPU upgrade, as these fit in the trapdoor. Are you planning to
add a CD-ROM? If so, the A1200 is the best bet. If not, then why tower-up?
You would still have to sort out a keyboard, and both machines are not much
bigger than a keyboard in total size.

I suppose on AGA you can run

You might be expecting a bit much of even the A1200. Your PC owning mates
are not likely to be impressed by the performance of anything but the most powerful
of Amigas if their kit is of recent vintage. However, the AGA chipset will run
rings around the A600 in everyday use. You also get more colours and
screenmodes, and 2mb of chipram. The A1200 would also have at least 3.0
Roms, and maybe 3.1 which would enable you to run OS3.9 - the last of the
classic OSes.
To summarise - if someone wants to give you an A600, take it. It will do
what the A500 does and has a built in hard-drive. But you won't get too much
more out of it.
If you really want to upgrade, get an A1200. You shouldn't have to pay too
much, and it can be upgraded according to your pocket.
Hope this helps. From someone with a nearly standard A1200, and an A600
which never sees the light of day!
Cheers cobber.
