The Doom Help Service (DHS) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Help Files Archive ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 12th Revision, 4/Dec/94 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Note: infant2 no longer has any Doom files. The Doom archive has temporarily moved to ftp.orst.edu until a more permanent home can be found. The directory on this temporary site is still pub/doom. Hi there! :) (And welcome, if you are a newcomer to Doom) This file contains a description of the various help files contained in the Doom Help Service Archive (namely, the file doomhelp.zip). Note that if you are a newish player of Doom and have any questions about anything, then you can post them to rec.games.computer.doom.help; this group replaces alt.games.doom.newplayers (which I created way back in April). Or you can email me, but I know more or less zero about many areas of Doom (hardware probs, net probs, editing). If your site doesn't carry r.g.c.d.h, ask them to (and while you're at it, pester them about the other r.g.c.doom groups as well). You'll probably find most of your questions already answered somewhere in the files described here. r.g.c.d.help is where folk can post questions without fear of being flamed. Free friendly advice. Of course, if you _want_ to send me heaps of money I won't stop you... :D Introduction: ------------- Doom is a complex game and has thrown up many questions. Like most subjects, there is a Doom FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) available. This is the 1st item listed below. Read this before anything else! Well, that said, it IS rather large and will have a lot of info that you won't immediately want or need to know. Also, read the 'README' file that comes with Doom as this has lots of info in it too. To include ALL the information relevant to Doom in the main FAQ would make the FAQ very large indeed. I have already had problems emailing it to several people because of its present size. Therefore, this archive contains, as well as the main Doom FAQ, a sizeable number of smaller text help files. These answer some of the questions which really need to be explained at a level of detail which is impractical to achieve in the FAQ without making it far too large. Archive Contents ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Incidentally, if you have downloaded the archive and are thus reading this, could you email me just to say so? I ask because I have NO idea how useful people find this archive. If you've any other comments/suggestions/etc, then feel free to email me. Contents format: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ - Contents list: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ doomfaq5.8 - The Doom FAQ v5.8, by Hank Leukart. It answers a vast number of questions about Doom and is a sizeable document. It has a very good description of the game as well. Read it before anything else! Like as not, the answers to most peoples' questions will be in this FAQ. doomchts.hlp - A complete list of the Doom cheat codes and how to use them. Also included is a summary of controls that you can use in Map mode, and how to use the berserker box when you already have the chainsaw. This file has been updated to include Doom II information. ftpdoom.hlp - A step by step guide on how to ftp shareware Doom v1.666. Especially useful if you're unfamiliar with ftp. This file contains a list of ftp sites to choose from. It also shows how to install the game once you get the ftp'd file. demomake.hlp - A step by step guide to making .lmp demo recordings of your Doom sessions. Includes example command lines to demonstrate the various parameters. This file does NOT, however, contain information about making .lmps of modem/network playing sessions. If anyone wishes to send me a complete description of how to do this, feel free to email me. dmiiscrt.hlp - A complete list of secrets for Doom II. awadis.hlp - A description of what a WAD file is. Explains the differences between an IWAD file, PWAD file, what they are, etc. pwaduse.hlp - A description of how to use add on level files (PWAD's). Contains info on front end utilities to make net play with add-on levels much easier and other info. pwadinfo.hlp - A brief description of how to begin making your own levels. This is NOT a file such as Tom Neff's Design FAQ (see next entry). It is just an explanation of what the business entails in general. Mentions the odd editor, that sort of thing. Useful for someone who hasn't started level creation at all just yet and has no idea where to begin. pwadmake.hlp - Tom Neff's Design FAQ v1.2. Contains the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about level creation and editing. dmshrwr.hlp - A complete list of secrets for Episode 1 ONLY. Written by Eugene Cohen, this is in word form (as opposed to the numeric co-ordinates given in the Doom FAQ). dmspec13.hlp - Matt Fell's Doom Specs file. If you intend to do any Doom editing, read this file! ftpsites.hlp - A list of Doom ftp sites. Contains the main Doom ftp site (ftp.orst.edu) and a list of its mirrors. See the Doom FAQ for a complete list of Doom ftp sites (the list I have is just for orst and mirrors. The FAQ has non-mirror sites as well). doomnet.hlp - The Doom Network Trouble Shooting Guide. Written by Murray Chapman, this guide is not a complete help text as it's designed for those who have dedicated Doom networks, but are still experiencing problems in getting the game to run properly. dsgn12fq.hlp - The Doom level-editing Design FAQ v1.2 Written by Tom Neff (editing God :). If there's a fact about editing and level creation, Tom will know it! :D ftputils.hlp - Where to get pkunzip, uudecode and the gmouse driver by ftp. (actually, it shows where to get the complete pk and uu archive files). inetdoom.hlp - The TCP/IP Internet DOOMer's FAQ. Written by Scott Coleman and Jay Cotton. linuxdm.hlp - The Linux Doom FAQ. Written by Steve VanDevender. patchinf.hlp - How to go about updating Doom v1.1 to Doom v1.2. A file containing useful hints and tips on updating Doom v1.1 to Doom v1.2 using the 1.2 patch. This won't solve _all_ the problems that people encounter when trying to use the 1.2 patch, but it will cover quite a few of the most common ones. notes1_2.hlp - Information on Doom v1.2 compared to Doom v1.1. This does NOT describe new features - it merely covers things such as saved-game compatibility, etc.. It has a big description of the PS/2 psycho-mouse problem and some ideas on how to solve it (like, update to Doom v1.666! :D). windoom.hlp - How to run Doom under Windows. Originally devised as a means of curing the psychomouse bug present in v1.2, but may still be useful for those who like to play at work... :-) spoilers.hlp - A spoilers file. I started this before the Doom FAQ completed its extensive list and as a result never finished it. However, some may find it useful. It contains complete walkthroughs for levels 1 to 3 of Episode 1 in Doom Registered (these walkthroughs are not written by me). The FAQ has an extensive list of secrets now, so this file is kinda redundant, but some might find the verbal descriptions easier. It covers the following: 1. Where is the entrance to the secret level in E2? 2. How can I kill the Cyberdemon at the end of episode 2? 3. How can I get into the secret room to the right of the blue key in E2L2? 4. I seem to be missing a secret in E2L2. Any idea where it is? 5. How do I do E1L1 (Hangar)? (this covers the entire level: how to get the power armour outside, how to find the new secret that is in v1.2, and is in fact a complete solution to the entire level). 6. How do I do E1L2 (Nuclear Plant)? (this covers the entire level: how to find the first chainsaw, the chaingun, the backpack, and so on. It is a complete solution to E1L2). 7. How do I do E1L3 (Toxin Refinery)? (this covers: 'How do I raise the bridge?', 'How do I get to the secret level on E1?', and is in fact a complete solution to E1L3). levelnms.hlp - Doom Registered Episode and Level names listing. A list of each of the names of the various levels in each episode of Doom I. A useful little reference! This should help reduce the number of 'I wish I could remember the level names...' comments! :D I have some other items available that are not contained in this archive. These are: - A .lmp demo of E1L1 showing where the new v1.2 secret is. Major spoiler! If you can't find the new secret, then this could be a last resort (it also shows a sergeant getting shot UP a flight of stairs! Dead funny to watch - pun intended... :)). - A .lmp demo of E1L9 secret level. It's not *fantastic*, but it _does_ show how to get to the tops of the five pillars). One of these days I'll do a better one... :) - pkunzip.exe v2.04. This is an unzipping program. You will need something like this to be able to unzip anything I send which has been zipped or to unzip most things which one may find on the various Doom ftp sites. Older versions of PKUNZIP (like v1.1) will often not work with stuff I send out that has been zipped (mainly because I use a pk-compatible zipping program under Unix). That's the lot. If you want any of the above extra items, then email me. When I email things to people, I would like to minimise the risk of bounced mail, partly to prevent the sysop here getting a coronary! :D Hence, please make sure you have a program which can uudecode files. I can send text files as they are, but the last 3 items mentioned above must be 'uuencoded' in order for them to travel safely via email. Without a uudecoder, the files will be useless to you. If you can ftp, then you can get loads of uudecoders from oak.oakland.edu in the directory /pub/msdos/decode (look in the file ftputils.hlp for more info). Finally, if you have any suggestions as to what else could/should be included in this archive, please email me. Or any other comments, etc. Byeee! :) Ian. PS. I also have a help file on how to transfer files from a VAX system to a pc. However, this is being radically re-written in the light of new information sent to me by a VAX expert and so is not included in this archive. Nevertheless, if you still want a copy of the incomplete file, then email me. )*------------------------------------------------------------------------- You may distribute this archive as much as you like as long as it remains complete, unchanged and is accompanied by this text file.
