Scientific Congress at the BIOTECHNICA '97Opening event, Workshop and Cooperation forum
Congress ProgrammeA vibrant exchange of ideas at international level: politicians, scientists and representatives from industry introduce the main themes and discuss trends and perspectives in three topical areas.Tuesday 21.10.97, 13:10 to 17:00 Food industry - Use of genetically engineered enzymes Coordination: Prof. Ernst H. Reimerdes, Nestle/Switzerland The diversity of natural products is produced exclusively by enzymes and biocatalysts. For the industrial preparation of food and animal feed constituents large quantities of certain enzymes are needed that can frequently be obtained more cleanly and ecologically using gene technology. Wednesday 22.10.97, 9:30 to 13:00 Health/Medicine/Pharmaceuticals - The human genome project and therapeutic perspectives Coordination: Prof. Rolf-G. Werner, Dr. Karl Thomae, GmbH/Biberach Greater insights into the molecular-biological relationships of pathological conditions are expected to result from the human genome project. From such new-found information it should be possible to derive protein substitution therapies as well as genetic and anti-sense therapies, and moreover to establish screening models for lower molecular compounds. Thursday 23.10.97, 9:30 to 13:00 Environment/Recycling - Biotechnology in environmental protection Coordination: Prof. Joachim Klein, Braunschweig University Enzymatic and microbial processes contribute greatly to avoiding or reducing environmental pollutants in the air, water and soil. As a result an interesting sector of the economy is developing. Current applications and prospects will be discussed.
