1. Introduction

Diskdrive benchmark on Win32 is a program for measuring readable and writable diskdrive performance on Win32 API and multi threads environment.

This program measures performance at these contents matrix...

• 512Bytes/an access, 64KBytes/an access and 1MBytes/an access.
• Read and write.
• Sequential access and random access
• Buffering and no buffering (R/W)
• Writethrough cache and writeback cache (W)

• 1,2 and 3 disk access threads.

2. Environments

Software: This program runs under the Win32 API environments.

• Windows95.
• WindowsNT 3.51 or later.

Hardware: This program runs Intel architecture PC.

• 4MB memory is required.
• "32MB + total physical memory" disk free space is required.

3. Setup and usage

• Copy DBENCH32.EXE onto any directory.

• Execute DBENCH32.EXE.
• Select target drive and thread(s) number.
• Click "Start" button.
• Click "Next" button after temporary files were created.
• Wait a few minutes :-)
  ** You can cancel tests by clicking "Stop" button.
• Click "Close" button after completion of all test suites.
• The results are displayed.

Tips:

• Execute "DEFRAG" before running this program.
  ** Windows95 only.
• Re-logon Windows with pressing "SHIFT" key.
  ** This operation avoids the "StartUp" process.
• In order to see only the performance difference resulting from the characteristic of a drive,
  please check "No buffering only" option.

4. Known problems.

• When program was abnormal ended, Delete temporary files manualy.
  ** Temporary files are "x:\tmpflush.000" and "x:\tmpbench.00n". "x" is target drive. "n" is threads number.
• In WindowsNT, it may be unable to flush read cache.
• In Windows95 OSR2, it may be pointer problem at 2 or 3 threads.

5. Changes

1.0 - 1.1

• Fixed disk free size calculate problem on over 4GBytes disk free space.
• The order carried out the direct stripes of the mistake which is reverse,
  "Chache flush time Include/Exclude" in report.
• Add "No buffering only" option.
