History ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 Introduction This file explains how to setup and to configure the ELSA Windows NT driver software for your graphics board. 1.1 Requirements This driver software only runs on ELSA PCI-bus graphics boards. 1.2 Further Information For more information on configuring installed ELSA graphics drivers, please refer to the Windows Help or to the help files to ELSA Utilities. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Installation NOTE: This driver was designed for full functionality under Windows NT 4.0 only! There are several ways to install an ELSA graphics driver: - Automatic installation by ELSA Setup Utility (2.1) - Via the Windows dialog "display properties" (2.2) - During the NT Windows 4.0 installation (2.3) 2.1 Automatic installation by ELSA Setup Utility First of all, start the Windows NT. To run SETUP.EXE then, you can either double click on it in the Microsoft Explorer or choose "Run..." from the "Start" menu. 2.1.1 Further Hints and Configuration -The Setup version 1.0 -1.9 only supports Windows NT 4.0 build 1381 in the German and English languages with Service Pack 3. -If the program is interrupted, for example by user inputs during a running automatic dialog, it will terminate itself after a certain period of time. The installation can be continued manually or the Setup program must be restarted. -If open, the Windows dialog "Display Properties" must be closed before calling the SETUP.EXE. -The file SETUP.INI(under Setup Options) provides the following switches: -"QuietInstall" and "AutoReboot". Both switches are "OFF" by default. If "QuietInstall=On" is indicated the SETUP.EXE installs the graphics display driver without requesting user input. For a complete installation the computer must be rebooted. - set "AutoReboot=ON". The section [Tools] provides an "InstallationFiles" key. This provides a list of all the installation script files additionally installed when choosing "Install ELSA graphics display drivers and utilities". These installation script files provide a [DefaultInstall] and [DefaultUninstall] section, so that they can be easily uninstalled/installed using "Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall under "Software"..." in the Control Panel. 2.2 Manual Installation 2.2.1 Manual Installation of the graphics driver NOTE: Please install the Standard-VGA driver first, then shut down your computer and exchange the graphics board. Click on the symbol "Control Panel" in the Startmenu/Settings or on the desktop with the right mouse button and select "Properties" in the pop-up menu. Select "Display Type" here (DISPLAY.CPL) and, under the tab "Settings", click on the key "Change configuration..." to modify the display settings. Select the ELSA graphics board by selecting "Change..." in the following dialog. The dialog box "Change Display" appears with a selection of available drivers under "Manufacturer/Display". Select the key "Have Disk"in the lower right-hand of the dialog box. The dialog "Install from disk" appears with an indication of path or floppy drive ("A:\"). Change the entry to the path where you find the driver files for your board (e.g."D:\WINNER\2000PROX\WINNT40") and confirm with "Continue". Now a list of ELSA graphics drivers is displayed. Select the driver for your board. Confirm the dialog. The driver is installed after confirming the warning that a third-party driver will be installed. Close all display windows. NOTE: With Windows NT 4.0, graphics drivers cannot be loaded dynamically. This is a limitation of the Operating System! To activate the ELSA driver the computer has to be restarted. Please press "Yes" in the relevant dialog. The system will reboot and the initial installation is finished. The initial installation of ELSA drivers for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 installs the driver in a resolution of 640*480 pixel at 256 colors and 60Hz refresh. NOTE: With the installation of the Windows NT 4.0 driver, the ELSA OpenGL driver is automatically installed. 2.2.2 Manual Installation of ELSA Utilities The ELSA utilities can be easily installed from the Explorer by clicking on the appropriate .INF file with the right mouse button (see 2) and then selecting "Install...". NOTE: The utilities can be uninstalled in the Control Panel under "Software", "Install/Uninstall...". 2.3 Setup During System Installation NOTE: You will need installation floppy disks (see 2.4). With a first-time or new installation of Windows NT, the identification of hardware and software components is followed by the query if you wish to accept the settings selected by Windows NT. DO NOT press ENTER! Move the highlight to "Display:". Choose "Other" here (requires disk provided by a hardware manufacturer). Insert disk 1 and select the driver for your graphics board. Continue the installation following all instructions. After restarting, Windows NT reboots in graphics mode. NOTE: the ELSA utilities must be subsequently installed manually (section 3.1). With the installation of the Windows NT 4.0 driver, the ELSA OpenGL driver is not automatically installed. 2.4 Making Installation Disks To create installation disks for the ELSA graphics driver you will need three empty floppy disks labeled "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 1", "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 2" and "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 3". Please note that maybe not all listed files are required and some files may have different filename extensions (e.g. "EGLXLD.dl_" instead of "EGLXLD.dll"). Select the tab "Settings" and there the key "Change configuration...". The following dialog gives information of the manufacturer, the version number and the current driver files. NOTE: If you see "Version Information missing ", you did not set US English as the system language. This problem will appear in all non-American NT installations. This is a limitation of the Operating System. 2.5.2 Determining the Version Number of the Driver via the Driver Files Use the Explorer to inspect the file properties for one of the files EG*.SYS, EG*.DLL, or EMG*.DLL. The file EG*.SYS can be found in the directory System32\Drivers and System32 of your Windows NT, the files EG*.DLL and EMG*.DLL in the System32\index. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 Additional Configuration Options 3.1 How to Install and to Configure the Driver If necessary, all tools can be manually installed afterwards. To do this, change to the corresponding tool subdirectory (e.g. 1386\GLSET), click with the right mouse button on the ".INF" file and select the entry "Install" from the context menu. After a restart the tools are fully installed. There follows a description of all the possible settings of the ELSA graphics driver for Windows NT and of the ELSA utilities. 3.1.1 ELSA WinmanSuite ELSA WinmanSuite is a tool, which integrates in the taskbar of your Operating system. Klicking the mouse on the tray icon, you will get quick access to all installed ELSA utilities. 3.1.2 ELSA GLoria Settings The ELSA GLoria Settings allow you to configure the 3D options of your ELSA GLoria graphics board. You will find this tool as a tab in the display properties or as a menu item in the WinmanSuite. You also will find a detailed description by clicking the Help key. 3.3 Monitor Conformity To take full advantage of your monitor, you can define new resolutions and other monitor timings, and store them in the timing file. In multi-screen operation, the timing must be set for each connected monitor. 3.3.1 Monitor Control With the ELSA program to set monitors, you can configure multi-screen environments. You will find it under Starting Menu/Control Panel/MONCTRL. The configuration options are described as follows. 3.3.1.1 Monitor Timings for ... In multi-screen configurations, you can select the monitor for which the timing should be set. 3.3.1.2 Timings This entry determines how the timing file should be used. IGNORE: All entries in the timing file are ignored, which means it is not employed. PREFER: Resolutions of the timing file are preferentially treated. If a resolution provided in a timing file is also provided by a driver, the data of the timing file will be accepted, and the data of the driver are rejected. Driver resolutions without a corresponding timing are accepted unchanged. NOTE: Using new drivers, it is possible that no resolution of the timing file is accepted, because of the multitude of timings offered. It is advisable to use the setting "Exclusive". EXCLUSIVE: All standard resolutions are rejected. Only resolutions from the timing file are available. 3.3.1.3 List of Monitors This list presents a series of symbols to characterize the timing entries. This should be a text applying to the timing and indicating exactly the monitor, e.g. ELSA ECOMO 24H96 3.3.2 Monitor Timings File The monitor timings are stored in this binary piece of data. The values of the timing file are accepted by MonCtrl and transferred to the list of disposal resolutions. Concerning the ELSA ECOMO 24H96 you will find a list in the System32 directory of your Windows NT 4.0 register. 3.3.2.1 Description of Timing File Format The file including the timing entries has the ending ".TIM". It contains lines with ASCII text which work with all editors (e.g. NOTEPAD.EXE). The first line contains a text to indicate the monitor (see 3.3.1.3). This text is registered in the MonCtrl tool of the monitor list. (i.e. ELSA ECOMO 24H96). In each of the following lines the timing is defined. Furthermore, each line contains 14 values separated by commas, describing the timing. The following parameters can be entered here (order as in the file) : - XRes: number of pixels to X-direction (e.g.1024) - YRes: number of screen lines to Y-direction (e.g.768) - Bpp: number of bits per pixel, color depth (e.g.16) - Hz: refresh rate in Hertz (e.g.79) -PxClk: pixel clock rate of kHz (i.e 95455) - Ht: horizontal total in pixels = hor. sum (e.g.1312) - Hfp: horizontal frontporch in pixels (e.g. 16) - Hsw: horizontal sync-width in pixels (e.g. 96) - Hbp: horizontal backporch in pixels (e.g. 176) - VT: vertical total in lines = vertical sum (e.g.800) - Vfp: vertical frontporch in lines (e.g. 1) - Vsw: vertical sync-width in lines (e.g. 3) - Vbp: vertical backporch in lines (e.g. 28) - If: interlaced flag (should be set to zero) An example of a file (24H96) with the named value, will represent as follows: ELSA ECOMO 24h96 640, 480, 8, 60, 25175, 800, 16, 96, 48, 525, 10, 2, 33, 0 NOTE: It is not necessary to indicate the parameters. Normally the indications xRes, yRes, Bpp and Hz are enough. All other parameters must be mentioned at least with a zero. Example: 1200, 800, 16, 75, 0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0 3.4 ELSA POWERlib ELSA offers the toolkit POWERlib as an option for the programmer. This is for creating your own applications which use ELSA graphics boards for graphical output. 3.5 Stereo-function This driver provides Stereo-functionality in combination with a GLoria-XL and Stereo-Shutterglasses. You can find further explanations and stereo demos on the WINNERware-CD under SAMPLES\StereoGL. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4 Known Problems - Stereo modes on GLoria-XL If a non-stereo OpenGL application is running, it is not possible to start any stereo OpenGL programs. However, OpenGL applications can be started after a stereo application. - If the application under OpenGL requests "Double Buffering" and the GLoria cannot realize it, software emulation will be installed automatically. To force hardware OpenGL you have to disable double buffering in your application! - The driver cannot run on a system where a port COM4 is installed. - It is possible that some computers need a very long time to boot. - If the ELSA graphics board is not recognized, try another PCI slot. Some motherboard manufacturers have implemented PCI slots that are not PCI compliant. - Multi-screen operation No full-screen DOS window, or the driver doesn't start.
