Additional Configuration Options 4. Known Problems 5. History ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 Introduction This file explains how to setup and to configure the ELSA Windows NT driver software for your graphics board. 1.1 Requirements This driver software only runs on ELSA AGP bus graphics boards. 1.2 Further Information For more information on configuring installed ELSA graphics drivers, refer to the Windows Help or to the help files to ELSA Utilities. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Installation NOTE: This driver was designed for full functionality under Windows NT 4.0 only! There are several ways to install an ELSA graphics driver: - Automatic installation by ELSA Setup Utility (2.1) - Via the Windows dialog "display properties" (2.2) - During the NT Windows 4.0 installation (2.3) 2.1 Automatic installation by ELSA Setup Utility First of all, start the Windows NT. To run SETUP.EXE then, you can either double click on it in the Microsoft Explorer or choose "Run..." in the "Start" menu. NOTE: Please close all programs before running Setup - especially older ELSA utilities. 2.1.1 Further Hints and Configuration 2.2 Manual Installation 2.2.1 Manual Installation of the graphics driver NOTE: First install the Standard-VGA driver, then shut down your computer and exchange the graphics board. Click on the symbol "Control Panel" in the Startmenu/Settings or on the desktop with the right mouse button and select "Properties"in the pop-up menu. Select here "Desplay" (DISPLAY.CPL) and, under the tab "Settings", click on the key "Change configuration..." to modify the display settings. Selecting the ELSA graphics board by selecting "Change..." in the following dialog. The dialog box "Select graphics board" appears with a selection of available drivers (under "Model"). Select the key "Other..."in the lower right-hand of the dialog box. The dialog "Install from disk" appears with an indication of path or floppy drive ("A:\"). Change the entry to the path where you find the driver files for your board (e.g."D:\GLoria\XXL\WINNT40") and confirm with "Continue". Now a list of ELSA graphics drivers is displayed. Select the driver for your board. Confirm the dialog. The driver is installed after confirming the warning that a third-party driver will be installed. Close all display windows. NOTE: With Windows NT 4.0, graphics drivers cannot be loaded dynamically. To activate the ELSA driver the computer has to be restarted. Please press >>Yes<< in the relevant dialog. The system will reboot and the initial installation is finished. The initial installation of ELSA drivers for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 installs the driver in a resolution of 640*480 pixel at 60Hz refresh. NOTE: With the installation of the Windows NT 4.0 driver, the ELSA OpenGL driver is automatically installed . 2.2.2 Manual Installation of ELSA Utilities The ELSA utilities can be easily installed from the Explorer by clicking on the appropriate .INF file with the right mouse button (see 2) and then selecting "Install...". NOTE: The utilities can be uninstalled in the Control Panel under "Software", "Install/Uninstall...". 2.3 Setup During System Installation NOTE: You will need installation floppy disks (see 2.4). With a first-time or new installation of Windows NT, the identification of hardware and software components is followed by the query if you wish to accept the settings selected by Windows NT. DO NOT press ENTER! Move the highlight to "Display:". Choose here "Other" (requires disk provided by a hardware manufacturer). Insert disk 1 and select the driver for your graphics board. Continue the installation following all instructions. After restarting, Windows NT reboots in graphics mode. NOTE: the ELSA utilities must be subsequently installed manually (section 3.1). With the installation of the Windows NT 4.0 driver, the ELSA OpenGL driver is not automatically installed. 2.4 Making Installation Disks To create installation disks for the ELSA graphics driver you will need four empty floppy disks labeled "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 1", "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 2", "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 3" and "ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 4". Please note that not all listed files are required and some files may have different filename extensions (e.g. "EGLXLD.dl_" instead of "EGLXLD.dll"). Copy the following files (as available) from CD-ROM to: - Disk 1 ("ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 1"): _INST32I.EX_ _ISDEL.EXE _SETUP.DLL _SYS1.CAB _USER1.CAB DATA.TAG DATA1.CAB DISK1 EGLXXL.INF INSERV.INI LANG.DAT LAYOUT.BIN LIESMICH.TXT OS.DAT README.TXT SERVICE.INI SETUP.BMP SETUP.EXE SETUP.INI SETUP.INS SETUP.LID UNINST.DLL SETUPDIR\001E\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\001F\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\0007\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\0009\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\0011\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\0012\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\0019\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\0021\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\0404\_SETUP.DLL SETUPDIR\0804\_SETUP.DLL - Disk 2 ("ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 2"): DISK2 EGLXXL.INF INSERV.INI SERVICE.INI TXTSETUP.OEM I386\EGLXXLD.DLL I386\EGLXXLM.SYS - Disk 3 ("ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 3"): DISK3 EGLXXL.INF INSERV.INI SERVICE.INI TXTSETUP.OEM I386\EOGLXXL.DLL - Disk 4 ("ELSA Windows NT 4.0 DISK 3"): DISK4 EGLXXL.INF INSERV.INI SERVICE.INI TXTSETUP.OEM I386\GLSET\EAPPSXXL.INF I386\GLSET\GLSET.CAB I386\WINMSUIT\WINMSUIT.INF I386\WINMSUIT\WINMSUIT.CAB I386\ELSAINFO\ELSAINFO.CA_ I386\ELSAINFO\ELSAINFO.INF 2.5 Testing the Installation and Determining the Driver Version Number 2.5.1 Testing the Installation Select from the Start menu "Settings" and in the Control Panel click on "Display". Select the tab "Settings" and there the key "Change configuration...". The following dialog gives information of the manufacturer, the version number and the current driver files. NOTE: If you see "Version Information missing ", you did not set US English as the system language. This problem will appear in all non-American NT installations. 2.5.2 Determining the Version Number of the Driver via the Driver Files Use the Explorer to inspect the file properties for one of the files EG*.SYS, EG*.DLL, or EMG*.DLL. The file EG*.SYS can be found in the directory System32\Drivers and System32 of your Windows NT, the files EG*.DLL and EMG*.DLL in the System32\index. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 Additional Configuration Options 3.1 How to Install and to Configure the Driver If necessary, all tools can be manually installed afterwards. To do this, change to the corresponding tool subdirectory (e.g. i386\GLSET), click with the right mouse button on the ".INF" file and select the entry "Install" from the context menu. After a restart the tools are fully installed. There follows a description of all the possible settings of the ELSA graphics driver for Windows NT and of the ELSA utilities. 3.1.1 Application Settings The ELSA Application Settings property page allows you to configure the 3D options on ELSA GLoria graphics boards. You will find the settings under "Start menu/Control Panel/Display". You also will find a detailed description by clicking the Help key. 3.2 ELSA POWERlib ELSA offers the toolkit POWERlib as an option for the programmer. This is for creating your own applications which use ELSA graphics boards for graphical output. This tool is available for Windows NT. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 4 Known Problems - If the application under OpenGL requests "Double Buffering" and the GLoria cannot realize it, software emulation will be installed automatically. To force hardware OpenGL you have to disable double buffering in your application! - The driver cannot run on a system where a port COM4 is installed. - It is possible that some computers need a very long time to boot. - IDEAS Master Series 6: Enabling the "Caps" results in display errors in shades. - SolidWorks98: Bad refresh problems may occurr using 15bpp resolutions - N-World 3.2: Buttons and menues are not displayed correctly - Stereo capabilities are not yet supported - Softimage: Running an animation in fastplayback-mode in one or more shaded views will cause flickering in these views. Activate fastplayback in one wireframe view to solve the problem. You also can completly turn of the problem by deactivating the pageflip mechanism (force buffer blit) but this will result in prefomance loss! ------------------------------------------------------------------- 5 History 5.34.00.322 ----------- - first driver release 5.34.00.332 ----------- - delayed reaction of buttons in SoftImage 3.7 fixed - display errors in Pro/ENGINEER fixed - performance optimization in Pro/ENGINEER 5.35.00.340 ----------- - Performance optimization in Softimage 3.7x 5.35.00.366 ----------- - new Setup for driver installation - Bugfixing for Softimage 3.7x - Bugfixing for Pro/Engineer - Bugfixing for 3D Studio Max 2.x - AppSets replace the GLoria Settings - new Tool ELSA Informationscenter - Tools are distributed in Cabinetfiles 5.35.00.374 ----------- - new Setup for driver installation - Bugfixing for Softimage 3.7x - Bugfixing for Pro/Engineer - Performance increase in OpenGL 5.36.00.402 ----------- Displaydriver: - Stereo support completed and bugfixed - Bugfixing for Pro/ENGINEER 18 - Bugfixing for Pro/DESIGNER 19 - Bugfixing for OGL Screen Saver OpenGL driver: - ICD 2.01.14.128 Setup and Tools: - Setup 2.5 - ELSAInfo 3.00.02 - WinmanSuite 1.06.02 - Applikation Settings 2.16.06
