DIED. FREDERICK UNGEHEUER, 61, journalist, who took his own life after a series of debilitating illnesses; in New York City. Ungeheuer was the classic globe-trotting TIME correspondent, covering Eastern Europe and West Africa in the '60s and the U.N. in the early '70s. After a stint with Chase Manhattan Bank, he rejoined TIME in 1977 as chief European economic-affairs correspondent in Brussels. Earlier this year, he returned from Paris to New York to pursue his first love: explaining Wall Street. "Friedel" was the ultimate perfectionist, fretting over the slightest nuance in his knowing, seamless copy, and so dedicated to his profession that he once abandoned a Thanksgiving dinner to nail down a major interview.
