=============================
Patch Notes
=============================

This is the 1.03A patch for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. It will properly update all prior versions of Rainbow Six.

This patch file does not replace the Voxware.zip release of Monday, August 24th. If you are planning on using voice communications in multiplayer, and have not already done so, you will need to download and install that file separately.

1.02, 1.02A, 1.03, and 1.03A are not multiplayer compatible with 1.01 and 1.00. You will get an error message if you try to connect to a version that is incompatible with your version.

If you have installed any third-party mods that update your data files, this patch may fail to install. Re-install your game from the CD, then reapply this patch.

===========================================
Changes in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six v1.03A:
===========================================

Other Changes:
- Certain installations of Windows(r) 95 (most notably the original version if Dial-up Networking was not installed) did not include some DLLs that the game used. We have removed a dependency on these DLLs. The game will now run correctly on these installations.
- Some minor text changes to better support internationalization.

===========================================
Changes in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six v1.03:
===========================================

AI:
- Tweaked AI pathfinding for low-end machines. You may not wish to upgrade to 1.03 if you have a high end machine.

===========================================
Changes in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six v1.02A:
===========================================

Multiplayer:
- Fixed an error launching a server from the command line. This was most noticable when trying to create a server from an on-line lobbying service.

==========================================
Changes in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six v1.02:
==========================================

Hardware Issues:
- Will now run on older Cyrix processors.
- Will now force software if R6 cannot initialize your hardware card. This fixes problems with Matrox Millenium cards.

Rendering Issues:
- You can no longer see characters through closed doors.
- Multiplayer screen resolution updates correctly without having to play single player first.
- Phantom shadows should be gone.
- Load screens in resolutions higher than 640x480 should display properly.

Combat Changes:
- Alert terrorists are now stunned for three seconds with a flashbang, instead of half a second.
- The blast radius for frag grenades has been increased from 5 to 8 meters.
- Fixed some occasional issues with firing, especially through doorways or windows at a distance.
- The shotgun combat model is revised: smaller spread, max effective distance, distance of maximum impact.
- The heartbeat sensor now uses both a sphere and a cone at all times. You no longer need to hold the mouse button down to get the cone effect.
- End game stats for friendly fire should now be correct.
- The extra secondary magazines inventory item now always gives you the correct number of magazines.
- Breaching charges should always be displayed properly.
- Glass that is cracked now shatters properly in all cases.

Plan Map:
- R6 no longer crashes in the planning map when a waypoint in the middle of a long path is selected and "Delete All" clicked.

AI Changes:
- Terrorists that are wounded but don't see or hear any team members will flee from the area.
- Terrorists that are shot at but don't see or hear any team members should stop and look around more often.
- AIs should be more intelligent about not getting killed when throwing grenades.
- Teams should no longer get stuck if they are asked to breach a door but have no breaching charges.
- AI's have a tighter turning radius. Should improve the AI handling of the staircase in the ship.
- Go codes stay fixed to proper waypoint regardless or proximity to doors and waypoints with other special actions.

Game Flow Issues:
- Fixed a crash involving loading default plans when the player has previously lost many operatives with different specialties. This was most noticeable in M06 (the dam).
- Difficulty settings should now work properly in all cases. Difficulty settings should be correct throughout a campaign and when branching a campaign.
- Fixed Practice and Training so that 'Retry Plan' uses the 'mileston.pln' file in the plan directory. This file is deleted each time the Practice button or the Training button is pressed so that the first time through there is no plan.

Multiplayer:
- PCs with both a network card and a modem should now be able to play across the modem.
- The server now provides gun characteristics and character attributes to all clients.
- No one can move in multiplayer until everyone can move (the quick menu cheat).
- The heartbeat sensor information should now broadcast correctly to teammates in multiplayer.
- Grenades should work much better in multiplayer. Clients and servers should both see the same path for the grenade, and grenades should always travel in the direction thrown. No more having grenades drop at the feet of a client with a hard throw, or appear to be thrown backwards out of someone.
- The server may now restrict the weapons available in multiplayer by editing MultiplayerEquip.txt in the data\kit directory. The client must have any weapons that the server is allowing.
- The multiplayer results screen will now tell who killed who. When you click on a dead or incapacitated person to see their statistics, it will show who killed that person.
- the proper end level success/failure end level screen is displayed for repeated (more than ten) retries in multiplayer coop.
- Added more elements to the action bar in multiplayer games. You'll now get in-game information describing the game type, map, time left, and your uniform type.
- The server now hears client go codes in multiplayer cooperative.
- Rate-of-fire now shows properly in multiplayer games when in observer mode.
- Various graphical tweaks to the Multiplayer Sessions menu.
- The names on the Multiplayer end screens now clip.
- Adversarial end screen should now say Game Over when the time-limit expires.
- You should also be able to click on the gold team when in a survival game with more than 8 people.
- Dropped the timeout for the end game screen to 30 seconds.
- Turn off the targeting reticule in multiplayer when you are in observer mode.
- Reservists no longer show up in multiplayer.
- Sniper and Night-vision modes are reset when switching to other characters after dying in multiplayer mode.
- Team kill totals are no longer displayed in non-team multiplayer games.
- If you're in the middle of a chat message when a multiplayer game ends and you hit return, you should no longer be kicked back to the main menu.
- Radio messages and music should only play for your team in a multiplayer game.
- When you switch who you are following in observer mode in a multiplayer game, you should get a message to indicate who you are following.

Map Changes:
- Fixed the back (garage doors) in M09 (the Mint). You should not get hung up trying to move through these doors any more. Support for reading map files off the hard drive even for minimum installs added so that this fix will work on a minimum install.

Other Changes:
- Added a key to recenter your view for keyboard-only players.
- Slight corrections to which music tracks are played when.

==========================================

============
Known Issues
============

Rainbow Six does not support the Windows key, the Alt-Tab key, and other keyboard shortcuts for switching applications.

Saving or deleting a plan file will fail if the file is write-protected.

In tutorial missions your plan will not automatically be saved and restored if you retry the mission. You must explicitly save and load your plans in tutorial missions.

Holding down an action key or a mouse button at the same time you use ESC to call up the quick menu from the 3-D action interface may cause control problems when you re-enter the action interface.

Clicking an action key or a mouse button while the action interface is loading may cause control problems when you enter the action interface.

=============
General Notes
=============

If you experience trouble with the chase camera in third-person mode, switch to first-person mode and back to clear it.

Key bindings are stored in the file sherman.kmp. This file may be copied and replaced if you want to swap out multiple sets of bindings.

If you have trouble running Rainbow Six, save a copy of the file sherman.log. This file may help tech support diagnose the problem.

If you have a Microsoft Intellipoint mouse and you want to assign an action key to the center wheel button, be sure that the wheel's button assignment is set to "default".

If Rainbow Six is running slowly on your system, several options may improve performance:
* Turn off fog in the video options.
* Turn off music in the sound options.
* Turn off the Max Sounds option. This limits the number of effects played simultaneously.
* Switch to a lower screen resolution.
* While in the 3-D action phase, use the minus key to shrink the 3-D portion of the screen.
* Re-install using the Full Install option.

========
AI Notes
========

Computer-controlled teams maintain an internal priority list to determine who will go first if there is a conflict. For instance, if you make a plan that sends the blue and red teams through a door simultaneously, the red team will wait for the blue team to move before proceeding. Occasionally a team may think its way is blocked by a higher priority team even when it isn't. This can be avoided by increasing the distance between the paths the two teams take.

If you take personal command of a computer-controlled team and lead them far off their planned path, they may not be able to return to their plan when you switch out of them. If this happens, take command again and steer them back onto their path.

While your computer-controlled teams will do their best to carry out your orders, there are some situations that they will not handle gracefully: Sending a team down a ladder while another team is climbing up the same ladder, sending two teams in opposite directions through the same door at the same time, crowding multiple teams into small rooms, etc. As a general rule, if a plan would cause chaos and confusion for the team in the real world, it will do so in the game.

================
Networking Notes
================

If you're playing from behind a firewall that blocks UDP packets, switch on the Behind Firewall option in the multiplayer options screen. This will result in a degradation in networking performance. There must also be a hole in the firewall at Registered Port 2346.

The Internet/LAN option on the multiplayer options screen tells the networking code to optimize for either low- or high-speed connections. If all players are on a high-speed network, set this option to LAN. If any player is on a low-speed connection (through a modem) set this option to Internet.

===========
Sound Notes
===========

If you are having troubling using VoxWare voice communication in multiplayer games, you may wish to try the following steps:
* Check to make sure that your sound card is capable of full duplex operation.
* Check that your sound card driver control panel to make sure that full duplex is turned on.
* Check that you have the most recent version of your sound card drivers.

Some sound cards require that voice capture be initialized before the rest of the sound software. Setting the ReverseSoundInitializationOrder flag in the registry to TRUE may allow voice capture to work.

A few sound cards may crash during start-up testing for voice compatibility. IF YOU GET AN UNEXPLAINED CRASH DURING GAME START-UP, setting the ForbidVoiceRecord flag in the registry to TRUE will prevent Rainbow Six from performing this test.

===========
Video Notes
===========

Rainbow Six requires at least 2 megabytes of texture memory to run properly with hardware acceleration. On cards with less memory the textures will be reduced to fit the available space. This may result in an unacceptable degradation of image quality. You can force the game to render in software mode (which will use full resolution textures) by setting the Force Software flag in the video options.

On some video cards (including the Voodoo and Voodoo 2) switching between hardware and software rendering in the game may cause transparency problems. This problem can be fixed by exiting and reentering the game.

On some video cards, in some resolutions, a line of erroneous pixels may appear on the right side of the rendering window. These pixels only appear in software mode and can be eliminated by switching resolution.

Trouble Shooting
================

- I can not see the opening videos, I don't get any text on my buttons, and my mouse is a large black box that seems to cover anything I pass my mouse over.
Answer = Update the drivers for your video card. If this does not work then:

Anyone with a monster 3d needs to visit the 3dfx website and download release 3.0 of the reference drivers.

Anyone with a monster 3dII needs to visit the 3dfx website and download release 2.1 of the reference drivers.

- All the screens of the game seem to be printing over the top of each other.
Answer = Update the drivers for your video card.

- I am trying to install Rainbow Six but I keep getting error : Error occuried during the move data process. - 113 componet program files. File D(or whatever your CD-ROM drive is):\constants.txt
Answer = You are running your CD-ROM drive off of DOS drivers. Contact the maker of your CD-ROM drive and update your drivers to Windows 95 drivers.

- The manual refers to the quick reference card but I can not find mine.
Answer = The card referred to is inside the front cover of your CD jewel case.

- I have Installed Rainbow Six correctly but when I go to run the game I get the following error message: RAINBOWSIX.EXE is missing a link to DSOUND.DLL
Answer = Explore the Rainbow 6 CD and go into the Directx folder. From there run Dxsetup. This will reinstall direct X 5.2

- I run Rainbow Six, the game crashes back to the desktop but I still hear the music playing.
Answer = Check the refresh rate of your 3D Accelerator card. Make sure it is not set too high or you will get this problem.

- I have a really good 3D accelerator card but Rainbow Six seems to be using my other card to play.
Answer = Contact the 3D card manufacturer and ask them how to specify their card as the primary accelerator. There are also utilities available on the internet that allow you to do this (3dcc.zip is one). RSE is not responsible for any problems that arise from the download or use of any third-party utilities.
