When Windows Safe Mode, System Restore and even the Recovery Console can't help get your troublesome PC working again, then there's probably only one alternative: reinstalling Windows from scratch. But getting your system back to normal will take more than just the Windows CD. You'll also need the drivers for your graphics card, printer, TV tuner, and everything else that's not directly supported by Windows, either from the original discs or downloaded versions (if you've upgraded them). And if your system won't even boot right now then locating all the necessary files is going to be a real nightmare.
Install Driver Genius Professional Edition 2006, though, and you can prepare for this kind of disaster ahead of time. The program lists every driver you've ever installed, and in a few clicks will back them up to a folder, a ZIP file, or even an executable file that will automatically reinstall the drivers for you.
This sounds invaluable, so we tried the program out on a PC that's frequently used to test hardware, and so is crammed with drivers. This made no difference to Driver Genius Professional Edition 2006, though: after a few minutes it had completed the backup, leaving us with a 44 MB ZIP file. This could then be burned to CD, providing useful insurance in case of a future PC crash.
The backup function alone is enough to make Driver Genius Professional Edition 2006 an essential part of every PCs disaster recovery toolkit, but the program does have other useful features to offer. It can also search online for driver upgrades that you've missed, which could improve PC performance. And you're also able to uninstall unwanted or invalid drivers, freeing up resources and perhaps making your system more stable.
