Troubleshoot opening or saving a presentation

When I try to save changes to a presentation, I get a message saying the presentation is read-only.

You can't make changes to a read-only file. To save changes, save the file with a new name by using the Save As command on the File menu. You can use the same name if you save the file in a new or different folder.

When I save a presentation, the file is saved with an additional file name extension.

When you save a file with an extension other than the default for that file type, your Microsoft Office program still adds the default extension to the file name. For example, a file name for a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation might appear as Budget.abc.ppt. To save a file with an extension other than the default, enclose the entire file name in quotation marks ù for example, "Budget.abc".

The presentation I saved contains two periods in the file name.

In Microsoft Windows, file names can contain some punctuation characters, such as commas or periods. When you save a file with a name that ends with a period ù for example, Sales. ù Microsoft Office programs add another period and the default extension to the file name. So if you typed the a presentation file name as "AnnualSales." it would be saved as AnnualSales..ppt. When you save a file with its default extension, it isn't necessary to type a period following the file name.

I entered my username and password but I still can't access a network drive.

Make sure you enter the correct username and password and that the CAPS LOCK key is not on. If you still cannot access the network server, consult your network administrator.

I saved my presentation as a Web page and tried to send it for review using Send To from the File menu, but it only sends as a .ppt file.

PowerPoint cannot send an .htm file in e-mail because your associated files cannot be added in this way. You can save the presentation as a Web archive first and then send it, or publish the file to a shared location instead.

To save the presentation as a Web archive:

  1. On the File menu, click Save As.

  2. In the Save as type list, click Web Archive.

  3. Click Save.

I saved my presentation as a Web page, but now I want this file in .ppt format.

One way to create both an .htm and .ppt file version is to publish a presentation to the Web instead of saving it as a Web page.

I cannot open a PowerPoint 2002 file in PowerPoint 95.

To open a Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 presentation in PowerPoint 95, the file must first be saved to the PowerPoint 95 format.

  1. In PowerPoint 2002, on the File menu, click Save As, and in the Save as type box, click PowerPoint 95.

  2. Click Save.
