Change captions
Do any of the following:
Change the label of a single caption
- Select a caption with the label you want to change.
- Delete the caption.
- Select the item you want to add the caption to.
- On the Insert menu, point to Reference, and then click Caption.
- Select the options you want.
For Help on an option, click the question mark
, and then click the option.
Change labels in all captions of the same type
- Select a caption with the label type you want to change.
For example, select the caption ôFigure 1.ö
- On the Insert menu, point to Reference, and then click Caption.
- In the Label box, click the label you want.
For example, click Table.
Change the number format for captions
- Select a caption with the number format you want to change.
- On the Insert menu, point to Reference, and then click Caption.
- Click Numbering.
- In the Format box, click the number format you want.
Update captions after making changes
If you insert a new caption, Microsoft Word automatically updates the caption
numbers. However, if you delete or move a caption, you need to manually update
the captions.
- Select a caption or captions to update. Do one of the following:
- To update a specific caption, select it.
- To update all captions, select the entire document.
- Right-click the selection, and then click Update Field on the shortcut menu.
Tip
You can also update captions by selecting a specific caption or the entire document, and then pressing F9.
