Troubleshoot bookmarks

An item that refers to a bookmark isn't updated correctly.

I see "Error! Reference source not found." instead of my text.

I see "Error! Bookmark not defined." instead of my text.

This message can occur when a bookmark is referenced to by a page number, but the bookmark has been deleted.

When I insert an AutoText entry that contains a bookmark, the bookmark is missing.

I don't get the results I expect when I edit a bookmark.

You can cut, copy, and paste items that are marked with a bookmark. You can also add text to, and delete text from, marked items.

If you This will happen
Copy all or part of a marked item to another location in the same document The bookmark remains with the original item; the copy is not marked.
Copy an entire marked item to another document Both documents will contain identical items and identical bookmarks.
Cut an entire marked item, and then paste it in either the same document or a different document The item and the bookmark move to the new location.
Delete part of a marked item The bookmark stays with the remaining text.
Add text between any two characters marked by a bookmark The addition is included in the bookmark.
Click directly after the opening bracket of a bookmark, and then add to the item ù for example, add additional text The addition is included in the bookmark.
Click directly after the ending bracket of a bookmark, and then add to the item The addition is not included in the bookmark.
Click at the end of a bookmark in a table, and then add a new row The added row is included in the bookmark.
