3D modelling software has a well-deserved reputation for complexity, but it doesn't have to be that way. Serif 3DPlus is so straightforward that you can produce genuinely useful work in less than 60 seconds: here's one example.
Click "Start from scratch" on the opening screen, and browse the Models palette. 3DPlus comes with lots of pre-built models (clothing, furniture, household appliances, sporting equipment), so you're not forced to build everything from scratch. Scroll down to "Planets", click the Earth-like one at the top left and it'll immediately appear in the work area.
Now click the left-hand Gallery, and click Animations. This provides colour changes, fades, fly-throughs and other fancy effects you can apply to any object. Click Spins, and select one you think would make for a realistic planetary orbit.
Click Play on the Animation toolbar if you like, to preview the spinning planet, then select File > Export Animation. Choose the animated GIF or AVI option to see the animation generated, and you've finished.
Don't think this simplicity means 3DPlus is limited, though. It's just as good with more advanced 3D work. You can build your own 3D shapes from 2D figures, for instance (extruded or lathed projection), then group them together into complex models. Apply colours or textures to add realism, then finish the job with the lighting and shadow effects. Multiple scene planes and 3D print preview (check your model from 7 vantage points at once) help manage the production, and the results can be impressive. Check the Samples to get some idea of just what the program can do.
