Webholmes 1.0 Readme

Webholmes is a tool for search of files on FTP servers in the internet. Search is carried out on the given filename by means of search engines. The idea of the program is simplify search of files in the internet. It is necessary to notice, that many free-of-charge file search engines, for example, filesearch.ru, allow the user to search for files on FTP servers in the internet, but their bases can be out-of-date, the server to which the retrieval computer refers, can be unavailable at present to time etc. Webholmes expands the given tools, allowing for each retrieved file to determine, whether it is accessible in a present time, then to measure speed of access to FTP to the server and, thus, to select optimal variant.

System requirements.

OS Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP,
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher,
Connection to the internet.

System requirements are not finally determinet yet, so if something does not work, write to me.

Program description.

Webholmes requests the user of a filename and refers to FTP search engines. The subsequent processing is made for each retrieved file depending on customizations of the program:

Check of existence of the file on FTP server.
The most powerful, but also the slowest mode. Check of existence of the file is made, its size is requested and time of connection to FTP to the server is measured.

ICMP ping.
Check of existence of the file is not made, measured access time to FTP to the server by means of ICMP protocol.

Click on header of the list of files allows to sort the list by the given field.

Program options.

Exact match - to search only for files which name precisely meets entered. If this option is not checked, all files which name contains the substring appropriate to the given template are searched.

Ping method - allows to select one of three ways of measurement of FTP servers access time described above.

Ping timeout - a maximum latency after which FTP the server is considered unavailable.

Maximum quantity of the retrieved files - amount of files which Webholmes will request from search engines.

This software product is freely distributed (freeware). You can use it free-of-charge during unlimited period, and also free to distribute without the notification of the author.
