Founded in January 1992, the Klingon Language Institute has two main missions. First, to promote, foster, and develop the Klingon language, and second to bring together Klingon language enthusiasts from around the world and provide them with a common forum for the discussion and the exchange of ideas.
We started quite small, mostly as a fluke: a few dozen people scattered across the United States (and one member in the U.K.). As of January, 1996 the KLI has more than 1000 members. Our membership spans thirty nations of the globe, drawing on the fascination with Star Trek and Klingons which has overwhelmed the world. Our quarterly journal, HolQeD, is registered with the Library of Congress (ISSN: 1061-2327).
As you explore this World-Wide Web site, you'll have the opportunity to hear Klingon, to see the writing system (which the Klingons call <pIqaD>), to learn about the many ambitious projects of the KLI, and to find out what you need to do if you're not a linguist but are just starting out in Klingon, or perhaps want to join the KLI. You might also take a look in our FTP archive (or access it via HTTP).
Now available is an online web-browsable version of the tlhIngan-Hol (that is, "Klingon Language") mailing list. The indexed version available consists of all messages posted so far this calendar month. Back issues are also available, in the same format. You may also search the archives for key words or phrases.
One of the most curious things I'm always hearing from Klingon fans when they first find out about the KLI is something on the order of "I thought I was the only one interested in this." Well, you're not. Read on, join in the KLI and allow us to introduce you to literally hundreds of other people who share your interest in Klingon.
