Capture of Balta Aug. 4th, 1941 The small town of Balta controlled the local road net northeast of Odessa. Assigned to take this crucial town was the German 744th Engineer Regiment and units of the Rumanian 6th Infantry Division. The Russians had fortified the town and even had two KV heavy tanks. Despite heavy resistance and the presence of the KV tanks, the Axis forces eventually forced their way into Balta.
