History...

This is Amiga News Website, English Chapter. It has been since August 3rd, 1999.

But it existed before this time already. It started as the "News & Stories" at amigaworld.com, originally. In November 1997, I (Martin Baute) agreed to help out the back-then Newsmaster. He was German (like me), and had a poor grasp of English (unlike me), so I started translating.

Pretty soon, it became obvious that the Newsmaster could not maintain a steady flow of news updates; after a short email exchange, I took over the whole news service all by myself, and started building a fully bilingual news service for the Amiga community.

However, amigaworld.com was poorly maintained. After several inquiries, offers for help and bug reports (which all went unanswered), I realized I did not have full control over the news website: A layout update, which was prepared in many hours one-handed work, was impossible because I was unable to delete files from the server, and worse yet, unable to create new ones. Paths were not handled correctly, and all in all, the server setup was a mess.

So, I decided to move away from amigaworld.com. Coincidently, my local user group, the Bielefeld Amiga Users & Developers, did set up a website of their own at that time; the News & Stories found a new host.

Another "move" was taken when I got my own domain for the News & Stories, www.news-n-stories.de (now obsolete). At about the same time, I made contact with Petra Struck, maintainer of amiga-news.de, which provided the all-around best news site I had ever seen. She agreed with me making 1:1 translations of her excellent news research, and so our cooperation started.

With time going by, our cooperation grew. Petra's website caught the attention of Amiga users, print magazines and other media, and the News & Stories became more or less the English "mirror site" of amiga-news.de.

So, it came naturally that, finally, the News & Stories ceased to exist on their own, and became fully integrated into amiga-news.de. A step that makes me very proud, and all the more motivated to provide the best Amiga news site available, with the help of Marek Suchowski, who does translations on Tuesdays and Thursdays so my girlfriend won't forget what my face looks like. ;-)
