ABOUT STARFISH INTERNET UTILITIES LITE ========================================== Welcome to Starfish Internet Utilities Lite. With this versatile collection of utilities, you can connect quickly to your favorite Internet sites, unzip compressed files, track your online communications, and more. Here’s what you get in Starfish Internet Utilities Lite: -- QuickMarks (Lite) travels the Internet for you, performing your commands and getting information. It helps you organize links to your favorite sites, and lets you quickly and easily save valuable data from the World Wide Web. -- You can use the unique QuickMark It! button to create Internet QuickMark buttons with a single click. No more worry about bookmarking your favorite sites, or taking the time to follow your browser’s procedures for creating a shortcut. -- InternetMeter (Lite) helps you to keep track of your communications using applications such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. It monitors the status of your call, the time you spend online, and your modem data. In addition, if a call fails, InternetMeter will show the reason, such as "Line busy." -- QuickZip compresses and extracts files easily and efficiently. Special features include the ability to quickly create self-extracting files (.exe) and drag-and-drop functionality. Here’s what you can get by upgrading to the full version of Starfish Internet Utilities: -- QuickMarks provides a unique Notification feature, which instantly lets you know which of your favorite sites have changed! You can then launch those sites with a single mouse click from the What’s New window! -- InternetMeter includes an expanded view of your connection and data flow rate. In addition, you can customize the InternetMeter to match your own communication style and even monitor your free time with online service providers! -- QuickZip can be added and removed, along with several other plug-ins, allowing you to customize Internet Utilities to meet your personal needs. -- InternetClock features the Internet Time Synchronizer, which precisely synchronizes your computer’s system clock with Internet time servers, ensuring that your system time is accurate and reliable. You can also use InternetClock to schedule alarms, reminders, and tasks, and display up to four clocks, each showing the time in a different time zone. Upgrade to get all those features! -- The Virtual Screens plug-in is like connecting your computer to several side-by-side monitors. You can open programs on the Virtual Screens, and then switch back and forth among them to work with the different programs. In addition, you can launch multiple instances of your browser. Then you can view one site while the browser in another Virtual Screen is connecting to another site. -- The Resources plug-in contains information about your memory, disk drive space, Windows system resources, and your system environment. Use the Resources utility to examine resource usage and to set alarm levels for low resources. -- Printer Manager lists all the currently installed printers, fax drivers, plotters, and other output devices. You can print or fax a file by dragging it to the desired printer icon, change the default printer, and more. -- WinTools offers single-click access to the most frequently used Windows 95 tools, such as Find and the Explorer. You can select how many and which tools you display on the Control Panel, such as Explorer, representing the Windows Explorer tool; Find, representing the Windows Find tool; and Internet Browser, representing your default Internet browser. Note: The online help describes all the features available in the full version of Starfish Internet Utilities. INSTALLATION =============== Install Starfish Internet Utilities Lite in a separate directory; do not attempt to install it over another program. ============================================ 3. STARTING STARFISH INTERNET UTILITIES LITE ============================================ Click Starfish Internet Utilities in the Windows 95 Start Menu. The first time you run Starfish Internet Utilities Lite, your system is examined and the following features are automatically set up: -- The AppOrganizer scans your hard disk for common applications and creates QuickMarks groups and QuickMarks buttons for them, such as a Utilities group. -- Starfish Internet Utilities Lite creates QuickMarks buttons representing Internet sites, grouped into convenient categories such as Search. ======================== 4. LIMITATIONS ======================== Limitations include: - When you view the Modem Setup dialog for the InternetMeter, you get the modem properties for the first modem installed. You cannot change to other modems. As a workaround, use the Windows Control Panel. - If you have large Bookmarks and/or Favorites groups that are not organized in folders, you may experience Resources problems. As a workaround, organize your Bookmarks and/or Favorites in folders, creating a hierarchical directory structure. - If you uninstall your default browser, your QuickMarks Internet buttons may not launch correctly. As a workaround, click Customize, double-click QuickMarks, and select Settings. Click the Advanced button, and select a browser for launching your QuickMarks on the Browser page. Note: Online and Internet service providers vary in their policies concerning their billing practices, such as in their methods for rounding up the hours spent or billing in minimum time increments. They also may change their policies. InternetMeter does not account for all such variables. Although InternetMeter will reflect the actual time spent online, that time may not reflect your final bill from your service provider. ============================================================= 5. RUNNING STARFISH INTERNET UTILITIES LITE UNDER WINDOWS NT ============================================================= Starfish Internet Utilities Lite has been tested with Windows NT 4.0, and the information provided in the documentation applies only to NT 4.0. It has not been tested with older versions of NT. ============================================= 6. REMOVING STARFISH INTERNET UTILITIES LITE ============================================= To remove Starfish Internet Utilities Lite: 1. Close Starfish Internet Utilities Lite and the InternetMeter background monitoring component. (Close the component by right-clicking the InternetMeter system tray icon and clicking Close InternetMeter on the shortcut menu.) 2. Open the Windows 95 Control Panel. 3. Select Add/Remove Programs. Then select Starfish Internet Utilities Lite from the list. 4. Click the Add/Remove button. 5. Restart Windows, and manually delete the Starfish Internet Utilities directory.
