RCOM is the first stage in a new Communications strategy from
Psion, more details of which will shortly become available.

"RCOM" stands for "Remote COMmunications".

RCOM is like an alternative to a Windows DOS box (a temporary
Command.COM), which can accept all usual DOS file commands like COPY
and RENAME, etc, as well as some special additions like BACKUP (which
incrementally backs up a drives from an attached Series3 or other
Sibo computer).

Inside RCOM, drives on the S3/S3a (previously referred to as 
"REM::M:" and so on) are seen as entirely equivalent to local drives,
and have names like "I:" (for Internal), "L:" (for Left) and "R:"
(for Right).  You can customise these names, as well as a great deal
more about the way RCOM works.

RCOM provides greater functionality than McLink and should work in a
much wider variety of hardware and software environments.

This release of RCOM
--------------------

This .ZIP file contains a beta release of RCOM.  RCOM has not yet
been released as part of PC 3Link, and may still contain cosmetic
flaws and other bugs.

While RCOM has already been widely tested, Psion cannot be held
responsible for any loss of data or other damage that may result from
use of RCOM.

Psion Product Development will be very interested to hear of users'
experiences with RCOM.  Please leave messages on the PSION
conference on CIX, the PALMTOPS forum on CompuServe, or the
comp.sys.psion newsgroup on InterNet.

Files in this .ZIP
------------------

Note: this .ZIP file should be unzipped with the -D option of
pkunzip, to expand the directories it contains.

For example, create a temporary directory C:\TMP\ and unzip the
contents of this file into it as follows:

    MD C:\TMP
    CD C:\TMP
    PKUNZIP -D C:\AMEOL\DOWNLOAD\RCOM102B.ZIP

(Replace "C:\AMEOL\DOWNLOAD\" with the location of RCOM102B.ZIP on
your PC.)

Three sets of files will be created by this:

1. In \TMP\, there will be this file (README.TXT) plus programs
required to install the Windows version of RCOM, such as the program
SETUP.EXE.

2. In \TMP\DOC\, there will be a Word for Windows v2 .DOC file
containing beta documentation (around 10 pages long) explaining RCOM
and the associated programs.  A Windows Write .WRI version of this
file is also provided.

3. In \TMP\DOS\, there will be files required by a Dos version of
RCOM.

Unless you intend to use RCOM entirely from the DOS command line, you
can delete the contents of \TMP\DOS\.

Please read the .DOC or .WRI documentation file for more details about
use of RCOM, either under Windows, or under DOS.

To get help on using RCOM
---------------------------

Inside RCOM, type HELP.

Note that the Windows Help for RCOM is not present in this beta
release.

Simple installation instructions - for Windows
----------------------------------------------

From the Program Manager, run the SETUP.EXE program (use the Run
command in the File menu) from the temporary directory it was
unzipped into.

Note: at the end of SETUP, another program, RCom Setup, is
automatically started, for you to configure your use of RCOM.

Once you have successfully installed RCOM into Windows, you can
delete all the files in your temporary directory (though first you
may wish to make a safe copy of this file, README.TXT, and the
documentation .DOC file).

Simple installation instructions - for Dos
------------------------------------------

You can use the batch file DOSSETUP.BAT. Note however that this
assumes that it is in a root directory, and that the various DOS
support files from RCOM102B.ZIP are in a top-level \DOS\ subdirectory
of a drive.  As required, either edit the DOSSETUP.BAT batch file, or
type eg

    SUBST F: C:\TMP
    F:
    DOSSETUP ?

Distribution of RCOM102B.ZIP
----------------------------

This file can be freely distributed, so long as it is distributed
intact, keeping all the files together in the .ZIP file.
