Out Of Body: The Monroe Institute

The Monroe Institute

Description of Activities of Monroe and his Institute

The Institute's origins date to the mid-50s when Robert A. Monroe (1916-1995) initiated research into the use of sound to accelerate learning. By 1958, efficient means had been developed not only to keep the mind awake, but to induce sleep easily and comfortably. While continuing to refine and develop specialized uses of sound, it was discovered that certain patterns of sound induce states of mind that are not otherwise easily accessible.

As additional investigation verified the effects of specific sound combinations and frequencies, methods were developed for an individual to maintain and control these states of mind.

Robert Monroe
By 1985 The Monroe Institute had become an educational and research organization, and was internationally acclaimed for its work on the influence of sound on human performance and productivity. Robert Monroe's contributions as the guiding personality behind the entire program of development have been supported for over three decades by hundreds of specialists from the fields of psychology, psychiatry, medicine, biochemistry, electrical engineering, physics, education, and many others who continue their participation to this day.

Institute research is based upon many thousands of hours of laboratory sessions with people reporting their experiences while listening to specific sound patterns. Electronic instruments are used to measure the effects on the brain of specific combinations and sequences of sound frequencies. These remarkable findings from over 35 years of meticulous experimentation and data collection have been recorded onto audiotapes. These tapes with our patented Hemi-Sync technology are available to the public for use at home or through educational programs at the Institute.
