Dalles, Oregon:
Going in Search of Bigfoot

You'll begin you're journey in The Dalles (or Dalles City), a small town a little more than an hour east of Portland on the 30 running alongside the Columbia River. The country, regardless of the direction you come from, is some of the most beautiful in North America.

In The Dalles, you'll find the Bigfoot Center, where director Peter Byrne will show you some pretty persuasive evidence to the creature's existence. The Bigfoot Center has been in existence for three years and last year alone recorded four sightings. The sightings have decreased this year. "We've only had one up in Northern Washington," admits Byrne.

For several reasons, Byrne is reluctant to say exactly where in Northern Washington. People don't want their lives disrupted by the media. Also, after a sighting, Byrne's team installs motion sensitive cameras in the trees to capture any movement from the creature's return. A tourist would trip the camera. (So before you go natural in the woods, you may want to look in the trees for cameras.)

From there you head...well, head in any direction you want. He's been seen everywhere in Oregon. We recommend a small campground near the Descutes River, just east of The Dalles. This is a primitive camping facility, but all the better for you Bigfoot sighters because the legendary behemoth steers clear of well developed areas.

YOU ASK: How do I know I've spotted Bigfoot?

Bigfoot is known to be eight to ten feet tall, is very hairy and weighs 600-800 pounds. He travels alone and smells like hell. In fact, that's how people first spot him. His stench.

Despite his massive frame, the gentle giant only seems interested in what his visitors are up to. Most visitors respond with their shotguns. Some have responded with their cameras. You've probably seen that famous footage of him walking away from the camera into the woods, giving one last glance before he disappears into a glade.

YOU ASK: How to Film Bigfoot?

All you need is a super 8 Camera with really scratchy film.

Only turn the camera on when his back is to you. Wait till he is almost out of sight where it could be Bigfoot, or a man in a gorilla suit. Unfocus, shoot, then remove the lens cap. Remember to shake the camera vigorously while filming.

Bigfoot has been spotted in every state in the Union and Canada. Strangely and ironically, while there have been 13 sightings in neighboring Alberta and 15 in Manitoba, there has not been one sighting since 1880 in Saskatchewan.

If you have any information, or if you've seen him, these people want to know.
