  • What is XEmacs

    XEmacs is a powerful, extensible text editor with full GUI support, initially based on an early version of GNU Emacs 19 from the Free Software Foundation and since kept up to date with recent versions of that product. XEmacs stems from a collaboration of Lucid, Inc. with Sun Microsystems, Inc. and the University of Illinois with additional support having been provided by Amdahl Corporation.

    Installation Method

    All of the subsystems for XEmacs can be installed using IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot. Refer to the Software Installation Administrator's Guide for complete installation instructions.

    Prerequisites

    In order to install any of the lisp products, you must also install fw_UIUCXEmacs.sw.lisp.

    Other Installation Information

    If you wish to use any of the mail packages include with XEmacs, you will need to enable the software to read your mailbox. This can be done by running the following command as root:
    chmod g+s /usr/freeware/lib/xemacs-19.13/mips-sgi-irix5.3/movemail
    XEmacs also has the ability to display the system load average in the window modeline. In order to enable this feature you must allow the software access to your kernel memory. This can be done by executing the following as root:
    chmod g+s /usr/freeware/bin/xemacs*
