  • What is Lynx?

Lynx is a World Wide Web (WWW) browser that works on normal terminals using the curses screen handling package.

    Author's Notice(s):

The author of this product is: University of Kansas.

    Installation Information

    Lynx includes these subsystems:
fw_lynx.sw.lynx (default) Execution environment for the Lynx WWW browser.
fw_lynx.man.lynx (default) Lynx 2.4.2's online manual pages (preformatted).
fw_lynx.man.relnotes (default) Lynx 2.4.2's online release notes.
fw_lynx.src The complete Lynx 2.4.2 software distribution from which this product was built (including SGI modifications).

    Installation Method

All of the subsystems for Lynx can be installed using IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot. Refer to the Software Installation Administrator's Guide for complete installation instructions.

    Prerequisites

Your workstation must be running IRIX 5.3 or later in order to use this product.

    Configuration Files

The following files are considered private to the target system and are not overwritten during the installation procedure; you may want to tailor them to your system's needs.
    /usr/freeware/lib/lynx/lynx.cfg
Configuration definitions such as the initial URL to display, and the location for help files. The default configuration is setup for a host directly connected to the Internet. If your host is connected to the Internet through a firewall it is expected that you will configure a ``proxy server'' for accessing WWW documents (consult the configuration file for information on doing this). If you require SOCKS support for accessing the Internet through your firewall then you will need to install the Lynx source code and rebuild the software with the appropriate SOCKS support.
    /usr/freeware/lib/lynx/mime.types
The default configuration for mapping MIME content types to document types. Typically there is a single system-wide file containing this information that should be shared by all WWW browsers. This file is included for reference; you may want to override the reference to this file in the lynx.cfg file.
    /usr/freeware/lib/lynx/mailcap
The default configuration information for the commands to use when displaying non-text content.

    Documentation Information

A preformatted manual page is installed by default; consult lynx(1) for an introduction. Additional documentation is provided in HTML; use the help facility from within Lynx.
