gawk is the GNU version of awk, a general purpose language mainly targetted for text processing. You may want it in order to run existing awk scripts. If you write your own scripts, better use perl.

All of the subsystems for this product can be installed using IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot. Refer to the Software Installation Administrator's Guide for complete installation instructions.
GNU awk is compatible with IRIX 5.3 and IRIX 6.x. It should be upwardly compatible with the System V Release 4 awk. It is almost completely compliant with POSIX 1003.2.
