top is a dynamic ps kind of program. It displays continuous reports about the state of the system, including a list of the top processes using the cpu, their sizes (resident and total), state and ownership.Version 3 of top is a big improvement over older versions. It displays general system parameters, like available memory, number of running processes, load averages, etc. You may monitor processes of a certain user, kill or renice processes (if you have permissions of course) from the top screen, and more. You may almost kiss old ps goodbye.
See the man page for details, or just try it. It is highly recommended.
top is being maintained and enhanced by William LeFebvre, lefebvre@dis.anl.gov of the Argonne National Laboratory, with help from many net contributors. Thank you William !
top was ported to SGI IRIX 5.3 by Sandeep Cariapa <cariapa@sgi.com>. Larry McVoy <lm@sgi.com> added support for IRIX 6.2. and John Schimmel <jes@sgi.com> kindly merged the two versions into one unified executable that can run on any SGI machine, without resorting to the metatop kludge. As always, the teamwork around here is impressive :-)
Packaged for SGI by Ariel Faigon <ariel@sgi.com>.
This is free software. Emails for support silently ignored. Patches and constructive suggestions for improvement welcome.
