  • What is VIM

    vim (Vi IMprooved) is Bram Moolenaar's improved version of the UNIX vi editor. If you like vi, you should feel at home with vim as it is basically a superset of vi. Actually, once you try vim, you would probably never want to look back at vi again.

    Vim is almost compatible with vi. But it has many new features: Full vi compatibility (except for the command "Q"), Multi level undo, command line history, filename completion, block operations for rectangular blocks, multiple windows (even for the same file), interactive compilation, visual highlighting and operations on same; text formatting, editing of binary files, improved command line editing, command typeahead display, command to display yank buffers, line wrapping can be switched off, file name stack, can be adjusted to understand error messages from any compiler, shows current file name in window title, on-line help, multiple windows and multiple buffers - and more!

    See the man page for details. Additonal documentation including a very detailed reference manual and more can be found in the /usr/freeware/lib/vim directory. For a full list of enhancements of vim over vi see the file vim_diff.txt

    Author's Notice(s):

    The vim editor is charityware. If you find this software useful, its author would appreciate it if you could donate money to help orphan children in Kibaale, Uganda. Please read the file vim_kcc.txt in the vim doc subsystem (which installs in /usr/freeware/lib/vim for details.
