IRIX is bundled with an extensive set of desktop software applications, including web tools, desktop productivity tools, third party packages, and other software.

The IRIX 6.5 Applications CD, May 2004 and IRIX 6.5 Complementary Applications CD are companions to IRIX 6.5.24. These CDs contain the IRIX Desktop and various desktop applications. They replace all previous IRIX 6.5 Applications CDs (June 1998 through February 2004). The Complementary Applications CD is not installed by default on new systems.

Application upgrades shipped with the IRIX releases are either Full images or Overlays. Updates to Full images are found on the Applications CD whereas updated Overlays are found on the IRIX 6.5.24 Overlay CDs. Additional applications can be found on the Base IRIX 6.5 CDs. To install the new versions of Overlay applications you must install IRIX 6.5.24. Full application images that formerly existed on both the Applications CD and the 3rd Overlay CD now only appear on the 3rd Overlay CD.

IMPORTANT Apps CD NOTE:
Because the .related_dists file has been removed from the IRIX 6.5 Apps CD distribution, users may not be aware of the /CDROM/dist/dev and /CDROM/dist/extras directories. To access these use the "Open" option in Software Manager.

The following images have transitioned to Expired support mode and have been removed from the IRIX 6.5 Applications CD, May 2004:

  • Display PostScript/X, 2.0.8 based on PostScript Level
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader, 4.05b
  • Impressario 2.2.5 PostScript Renderer
  • Impressario 2.2.5 Host RIP Printers

Starting with IRIX 6.5.24, the Impressario PostScript render engine and Host RIP printers have been removed. If you require non-PostScript printer support look on the Complementary Apps CD for the Easy Software ESP PrintPro package and the 33 printer driver packages. You can obtain a 21-day demo license for this software by going to the ESP web site.

Over time, SGI will continue to deliver total solutions by adding to IRIX 6.5 Advanced Server Environment and Advanced Workstation Environment, allowing you to do more with your SGI machines.
