Sapphire/Web State Management

10

Introduction

The concept of state is something most people never think about, but just assume as a matter of fact. One assumes, for example, the ability to use pronouns in a sentence, because one expects the reader or listener to be able to associate the use of "he", for example, with the previously-named subject of the sentence or paragraph. This is an example of an implicit belief in the existence of a state of affairs.

The design of a Web Server is purely and simply to accept a request and pass back some data. It is given nothing with which to identify the sources of the requests and therefore can make no correlation between information and source. It is, for example, impossible to create a simple shopping cart program, where the user accumulates items in a container, because the server has no way to "remember" these things.

To overcome this shortcoming in Web Servers, a number of strategies have been devised.

Sapphire/Web can be used to create projects offering any or all of these.
