CoCreate software first to announce technologies for shared-space designNew Design Products for Mechanical Design Market Due in 1997FORT COLLINS, Colo., Jan. 21, 1997 -- CoCreate Software Inc. today announced it has developed technologies that support the concept of shared-space design, allowing multiple users in different locations to work simultaneously on the same mechanical computer-aided design. The company, a subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard Company, said it is the first to announce demonstrable technologies that make the concept of shared-space design possible. New mechanical-design products based on the technologies are scheduled to be released to pilot sites for evaluation early this year. "Shared-space design is a concept that revolutionizes how companies will develop products in the future," said Tilman F. Schad, CoCreate's president. "It supports processes that enable us to involve everyone who is touched by a product in the design process -- from the design team, to outside suppliers, to the ultimate customer -- with minimal effect on time and cost." The CoCreate technologies address the following three requirements for making shared-space design a reality for mechanical designs: Controlled connection -- These technologies connect authorized users over the Internet and intranets. While there are many tools that enable connections today, these tools don't take into account that information may be sensitive and that connections must be controlled. CoCreate's technologies identify authorized users and their changing rights to read, modify and use different parts of a product at different stages in the process. Easy and simultaneous access -- The technologies also provide a common space in which multiple users can work on the same design model simultaneously. "Great products come from innovation, and innovation comes from teams," Schad said. "Our technologies give each member of a team a common virtual location that they can easily access from their own home pages, and in which they can work cooperatively and simultaneously in a process that we call co-creation." Design modification without knowing design history -- Finally, CoCreate has developed the industry's first technology that lets team members alter parts in a design without having to know the geometric history. This approach represents an important distinction between CoCreate and its competitors in the MCAD software industry because it frees minds to focus on creativity, not historical detail. "Products based on these technologies will enable engineers to collaborate more effectively in combining electrical, electronic, mechanical, chemical, optical and other disciplines that are an integral part of today's products," Schad said. "Those products will continue the tradition -- first by HP and now by CoCreate -- of supporting platform-independence, open systems and industry standards." CoCreate Software Inc. is a software subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard
Company. It develops mechanical computer-aided-design and
product-data- management software that supports the concept of
shared-space design. The software includes SolidDesigner for
product-modeling design; ME10 for 2-D design, drafting and
documentation; DDS-C for electro-mechanical design; and WorkManager for
product-data and workflow management. CoCreate solutions are known for
high quality, ease of use, customization capability and support of
industry standards. They are available in 10 languages and are
installed on more than 100,000 systems in design, engineering and
manufacturing organizations worldwide.
