MULTIGENS SMARTSCENE WINS
INDUSTRY EXCELLENCE AWARD
SAN JOSE, CALIF., -- MAY 29, 1997 MultiGen, Inc., the leader in realtime 3D authoring software, today announced that its SmartSceneä product received first place in the 1996 IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) Industry Excellence Awards. The CG&A editorial board members, made up of industry and academic experts in all areas of computer graphics, judged the entries based on their technical merit, innovation and overall contribution to the field to determine the most noteworthy new product.
Created in 1982, the CG&A board initiated the Industry Excellence Awards to honor innovative graphics products introduced during that calendar year. This is the latest of many awards for MultiGen and SmartScene. The latest SmartScene awards include: the 1995 Virtual Reality Product of the Year from Cyberedge Journal and the 1996 Computer Graphic World Innovation Award from Computer Graphics World.
"This latest award recognizes MultiGens significant innovation and solidifies its leadership in the realtime 3D market," said Timothy Stewart, SmartScene product manager at MultiGen, Inc. "SmartScene will continue to broaden the access to realtime 3D assembly and viewing applications beyond the scope of todays visual simulation professionals."
SmartScene offers an entirely new approach to assembling realtime 3D objects. Users take advantage of natural hand-eye coordination, making the manipulation of 3D objects far more intuitive and creative. By combining an ingenious two-handed interface with ModelTime Behaviorsä, SmartScene increases object assembly productivity by an order of magnitude. Designed for ease-of-use, SmartScene based training applications take less than an hour in which to become proficient.
Realtime environments allow the user to interact with a database of 3D objects at 24 to 30 frames a second - essentially the same speed of film. Realtime 3D graphics were first used in flight simulation systems with million-dollar proprietary computers. MultiGens tools provide realtime applications for both the simulation and entertainment markets on commercially available workstations.
"SmartScene has helped us to reach new heights of productivity in complex object assembly, and it has allowed us to build 3D scenes and visual elements quickly and easily. It is truly the best assembly and viewing application tool, "said Col. Lynn A. Carroll, division chief of the Aircrew Training Research Division at Armstrong Laboratory.
"By coupling leading software solutions, such as SmartScene, with visual computing systems from Silicon Graphics, manufacturers can create highly realistic representations of work environments," said Jennifer Morton, digital prototyping market development manager for Silicon Graphics, Inc. "Used by manufacturers to safely train their production line employees, this award-winning technology allows for significant savings in time and money."
