A Resource About Focus on Fiber
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are just a bit confused about the health benefits of adequate
fiber in your diet, you are not alone. Recommendations for a daily
consumption of as much as 25 to 30 grams of fiber per day may be found in many
publications, and it is widely accepted that Americans consume an average of
but 11 grams a day. Almost daily I receive requests for food lists that
indicate the amount of fiber in various foods, indicating a high level of
interest in this question. Some of the answers are provided in an informative
pamphlet entitled "Focus on Fiber", provided by General Mills Inc. and
obtainable by addressing your request to Focus on Fiber, P.O.Box 5277,
Minneapolis, Minnesota 55460. In addition to a description of water soluble
and insoluble fibers, it provides general information about the benefits of
fiber in the diet. Several pages of lists indicate the quantity of fiber in
breads, cereals and pasta, cooked legumes, vegetables, and fruits and nuts.
Once you are aware of these amounts, you may begin to plan your daily menu
with fiber in mind, and work towards attaining the amounts recommended by the
National Cancer Institute.
