Diet and Exercise and Diabetes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION: I am very careful about my diet and exercise because I have
suffered from diabetes for many years now. Although there has been no change
in my habits, I am now having difficulty maintaining control, though I have
not changed my diabetes medication schedule. I don't know what to tell my
doctor and wonder if you have any ideas that could help?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: You are right to think of diet and exercise first, as they are two
important factors in controlling your diabetes that are most apt to change a
bit without your being aware. If they are unchanged, my next thought would be
quiz you on life style changes or new medications that you may now be taking
now. Have you tried to stop smoking recently, perhaps using some product to
help you quit? Both situations can affect the way your body handles glucose.
What about coffee? Even without sugar, an excessive amount of caffeine can
produce extra sugar in your blood. and caffeine may be found in some soft
drinks, "stay awake" products or diet pills as well. Any new over the counter
medications taken lately? They could contain sugar (as syrup in cough
mixtures) or alcohol. Your best bet is to make a careful survey of everything
you are doing differently, and consult with your physician. There are a lot
of hidden circumstances that can affect your blood sugar, and together you
will probably discover the culprit.
