A Resource About Lyme Disease
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lyme disease is now the most common tick-borne disorder in the United States
and can affect the skin, joints, nervous system, heart and eyes. Although it
was only reported in 10 states in 1979, today it has been found in 46 states.
While the disease can be treated with a variety of antibiotics, it is still
difficult to diagnose. As a disease with a wide variety of symptoms, and one
which can be quite severe, prevention is still the best "medicine" for this
spreading health hazard. The editors of the National Institutes of Health
monthly publication NIH HEALTHLINE have prepared a mini-poster that can be of
enormous assistance to all health educators and health care providers. It's
called "It's Lyme Time", measures 8 1/2" X 11" and provides a graphic
illustration of seven important measures that can help you protect yourself.
Physicians, nurses, and health educators who would find this useful in their
work can obtain a copy by faxing a request to (301) 402-0395 (Mon.-Fri.;
7:30AM-4:00PM Eastern Time). All others may also obtain a copy by sending a
request, including a self addressed LABEL to Lyme Disease/HL, National
Institutes of Health, Building 31, Room 2B23, Bethesda, MD 20892. Once you
have your poster, you may make your own copies for distribution, as material
from NIH HEALTHLINE is not copyrighted, and you are encouraged to help spread
this important information.
