  33.      Acyclovir ointment should be stored in a cool, dry place.
  34.  
  35. USES
  36.  
  37.      Acyclovir is used to treat genital herpes and herpes infections of the
  38. skin.  Acyclovir prevents the growth and multiplication of the Herpes virus.
  39. This drug does not cure a herpes infection, but may relieve the pain
  40. associated with the viral infection and may shorten its duration.
  41.  
  42. TREATMENT
  43.  
  44.      Apply acyclovir as soon as possible after the symptoms of a herpes
  45. infection appear.  Wash the infected area with soap and water, and allow it to
  46. dry.  To avoid spreading the infection, use a rubber glove or a finger cot to
  47. apply the ointment.  Apply enough acyclovir to cover the entire area of the
  48. infection.
  49.      Complete the full course of therapy (usually about ten days), even if
  50. your symptoms disappear sooner.
  51.      If you miss a dose of this medication, apply the missed dose as soon as
  52. possible.  However, if you do not remember until it is almost time for the
  53. next dose, do not apply the missed dose at all; just return to your regular
  54. dosing schedule.  Do not use a double dose of the medication at the next
  55. application.

  57. SIDE EFFECTS
  58.  
  59.      Minor.
  60.  
  61.      You may experience temporary pain, burning, stinging, itching, or rash
  62. when this medication is applied.
  63.      This sensation should disappear as your body adjusts to the medication.

  65.      Major.
  66.  
  67.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  68. particularly bothersome.

  70. INTERACTIONS
  71.  
  72.      Acyclovir should not interact with other medications if it is used
  73. according to directions.

  75. WARNINGS
  76.  
  77.      * Be sure to tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you
  78. have had to any medications.
  79.      * Acyclovir ointment is intended for use on the skin only; it should not
  80. be used in or around the eyes.
  81.      * Try to avoid sexual activity while you have signs or symptoms of
  82. genital herpes; this medication does not prevent the transmission of herpes to
  83. other individuals, nor does it prevent recurrences.
  84.      * This medication has been prescribed for your current infection only.  A
  85. subsequent infection, or one that someone else has, may require a different
  86. medication.  Do not use your medication to treat other infections, unless your
  87. doctor directs you to do so.
  88.      * Be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although this drug
  89. appears to be safe in animals, studies in humans during pregnancy have not
  90. been conducted.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.
  91. It is not known whether acyclovir passes into breast milk.
