  33.      Auranofin should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed
  34. container.

  36. USES

  38.      Auranofin is a gold compound used to treat active rheumatoid arthritis.
  39. It is unclear how auranofin works to relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid
  40. arthritis.
  41.  
  42. TREATMENT
  43.  
  44.      Auranofin can be taken either on an empty stomach or with food or milk
  45. (as directed by your doctor).  It can be taken along with other antirheumatic
  46. medications.
  47.      The full effects of auranofin for the control of arthritis symptoms may
  48. not become apparent for several months.  It is important to continue taking
  49. this medication until your doctor instructs you to do otherwise.
  50.      Auranofin is generally reserved for arthritis patients who have not
  51. responded to or did not tolerate other medications.  It should be used in
  52. conjunction with, not in place of, a total treatment program, which can
  53. include diet, exercise, rest, and heat treatments.
  54.      If you miss a dose of this drug, take the missed dose as soon as
  55. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, don't
  56. take the missed dose at all; just wait until the next scheduled dose.

  58. SIDE EFFECTS
  59.  
  60.      Minor.
  61.  
  62.      Abdominal cramps, constipation, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, loss of
  63. appetite, nausea, or vomiting.  As your body adjusts to auranofin, these
  64. effects should disappear.
  65.      To relieve constipation, increase the amount of fiber in your diet (fresh
  66. fruits and vegetables, salads, bran, and whole-grain breads), exercise, and
  67. drink more water (unless your doctor directs you to do otherwise).

  71.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  72. particularly bothersome.  IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about
  73. black or tarry stools, blood in the urine, fever, gingivitis (inflammation of
  74. the gums), hair loss, itching, metallic taste, mouth sores, persistent
  75. diarrhea, rash, shortness of breath, sore throat, tingling or pain in the
  76. fingers or toes, tongue sores, unusual bleeding or bruising, or yellowing of
  77. the skin or eyes.

  79. INTERACTIONS

  81.      Auranofin can increase the blood concentration of phenytoin, which can
  82. increase the risk of side effects.
  83.      Before taking auranofin, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any
  84. medications that you are currently taking.  It is especially important to tell
  85. your doctor if you are taking phenytoin.

  87. WARNINGS
  88.  
  89.      * Tell your doctor about any unusual or allergic reactions you have had
  90. to any medications, especially to auranofin or injectable gold compounds
  91. (aurothioglucose or gold sodium thioglucose).
  92.      * Before taking auranofin, be sure to tell your doctor if you now have or
  93. if you have ever had blood disorders, bone marrow disease, heart disease,
  94. inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease), kidney
  95. disease, liver disease, or rash.
  96.      * Regular blood and urine tests should be performed to assess possible
  97. side effects of auranofin.  It is important for you to keep all your scheduled
  98. appointments.
  99.      * Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Complete studies in pregnant
  100. women have not yet been performed.  However, birth defects have occurred in
  101. the offspring of pregnant animals that have been given large doses of
  102. auranofin.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an infant.  It is
  103. not yet known if auranofin passes into human breast milk, but it has been
  104. shown that this drug passes into the milk of animals.
