First Aid Introduction
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Often, without warning, you could be called upon to use basic lifesaving
skills to help someone in need. The First Aid Section of The Family Doctor is
to help prepare you and your family for these potential emergency situations.
When emergencies do occur, providing first aid within the crucial first
few minutes can mean the difference between life and death. And when you
perform first aid properly, it enables medical professionals to provide their
care more effectively. With minor injuries or illnesses, knowing what to do
and when you need to seek medical assistance can save time and money.
The First Aid Section is designed to meet your needs in an emergency, and
to provide quick and easy access to the information. However, we advise that
you and your family take the time to review the material in this Section again
and again. Acquaint yourself with the basic procedures now so that it will
serve you and your family well before an emergency strikes.
There are three parts to the First Aid Section to review:
"What To Do First" will prepare you to react quickly in an emergency, and to
call for emergency medical assistance;
"First Aid and Emergency Care" includes step-by-step treatment (in some cases
through animations) of specific injuries and illnesses;
"Your First Aid Kit" recommends what to have in your home to be prepared for
providing emergency care.
----------------
This Section has been prepared as a quick-reference, but should in no way
substitute for the extensive and professional training you should receive to
be fully prepared for an emergency. We recommend you contact your local
hospital or American Red Cross for comprehensive First Aid training and
certification.
