TOMMY'S POKER PARLOR (C) COPYRIGHT 1987 BY TOMMY'S TOYS
P. O. BOX 11261, DENVER, CO 80211 USA. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
CATALOG #87-058-1A
INSTRUCTIONS:
TOMMY'S POKER PARLOR SIMULATES A 2 TO 7 HANDED POKER GAME. YOU ALWAYS PLAY
HAND 1 AT THE LEFT OF THE SCREEN, THE COMPUTER PLAYS THE REST. YOU ARE ALWAYS
THE RECIPIENT OF THE FIRST CARD DEALT.
EACH COMPUTERIZED PLAYER IS ASSIGNED A RANDOM (SECRET) SKILL LEVEL BY THE
COMPUTER TO MAKE THINGS INTERESTING.
TOMMY'S POKER PARLOR PLAYS THE FOLLOWING KINDS OF POKER:
0. COLD HANDS
1. DRAW POKER
2. 5-CARD STUD
3. SPIT IN THE OCEAN
4. WILD WIDOW
5. SHOTGUN
THE RULES WILL BE DESCRIBED LATER.
WHAT IS POKER?
THE ESSENCE OF POKER IS THAT EACH HAND HAS A UNIQUE RANKING AMONG ALL POSSIBLE
HANDS: EACH PLAYER IS DEALT A HAND, THEN THE PLAYERS THROW CHIPS INTO A POT
BASED ON THEIR BELIEF THAT THEY HAVE THE BEST HAND, THEN THE HANDS ARE SHOWN
AND BEST HAND TAKES ALL (POKER COMES FROM THE GERMAN WORD POCHEN MEANING TO
BLUFF.) AT ANY STAGE OF THE BETTING, YOU HAVE TO DETERMINE WHETHER YOU ARE
SO CONFIDENT THAT YOUR HAND IS THE BEST THAT YOU WILL TAKE THE RISK OF LOSING
SOME MORE CHIPS IN EXCHANGE FOR THE POTENTIAL REWARD OF WINNING ALL THE CHIPS
IN THE POT. NOTE, HOWEVER, THAT YOU NEVER WORRY ABOUT THE CHIPS YOU HAVE
ALREADY CONTRIBUTED TO THE POT, BECAUSE THEY NOW BELONG TO THE POT NOT YOU;
THE CURRENT SIZE OF THE POT ALONE IS YOUR BAIT.
THE POTS:
EACH PLAYER STARTS OUT WITH 1000 CHIPS. HOWEVER, EACH TIME YOU EXIT THE
PROGRAM, OR START A NEW GAME, YOUR CUMULATIVE WINNINGS ARE SAVED ON DISK.
THE DECK:
THE STANDARD 52-CARD DECK IS USED. IN ADDITION, UP TO 52 JOKERS MAY BE
ADDED. OF COURSE THE MORE JOKERS THE MORE HIGH HANDS AND THE MORE ACTION IN
BETTING (DRAW POKER WITH NO JOKERS CAN BE VERY BORING).
THE SHUFFLE:
THE DECK IS ALWAYS SHUFFLED 3 TIMES BEFORE THE DEAL, AND WHEN 1 CARD IS LEFT
THE DISCARDS ARE GATHERED AND RESHUFFLED BEFORE DRAWING ANOTHER CARD.
RANK OF HANDS:
THE POKER HANDS, IN ORDER OF RANK (HIGH TO LOW), ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1. STRAIGHT FLUSH: 5 CARDS OF THE SAME SUIT IN DESCENDING RANK. ACES
MAY BE EITHER HIGH (A-K-Q-J-10) OR LOW (5-4-3-2-A).
NOTE THAT ALL SUITS ARE THE SAME IN THE SCORING, SO THAT IDENTICAL
STRAIGHT FLUSHES WITH DIFFERENT SUITS WOULD TIE. ALSO NOTE THAT
THE BEST STRAIGHT FLUSH IS ACE-HIGH AND THE WORST ACE-LOW.
2. FOUR OF A KIND: 4 CARDS OF THE SAME RANK.
3. FULL HOUSE: 3 OF A KIND AND 2 OF A KIND.
4. FLUSH: ANY 5 CARDS OF THE SAME SUIT.
5. STRAIGHT: 5 CARDS IN DESCENDING RANK BUT NOT NECESSARILY THE SAME SUIT.
6. THREE OF A KIND: 3 CARDS OF THE SAME RANK.
7. TWO PAIRS: 2 CARDS OF ONE RANK AND 2 CARDS OF ANOTHER RANK.
8. ONE PAIR: 2 CARDS OF ONE RANK.
9. BUST HAND: NONE OF ABOVE.
PROBABILITIES OF HANDS:
IN A 52-CARD DECK, THERE ARE THE FOLLOWING NUMBER OF HANDS OF EACH KIND IN
THE 2,598,960 POSSIBLE DIFFERENT HANDS:
HAND NUMBER PROBABILITY OF DRAWING IT
---- ------ -------------------------
STRAIGHT FLUSH 40 15 IN A MILLION
FOUR OF A KIND 624 2400 IN A MILLION
FULL HOUSE 3744 1.5 IN A THOUSAND
FLUSH 5108 2 IN A THOUSAND
STRAIGHT 10200 4 IN A THOUSAND
THREE OF A KIND 54912 21 IN A THOUSAND
TWO PAIRS 123552 48 IN A THOUSAND
PAIR 1098240 0.423
BUST 1302540 0.501
-------
2598960
TOMMY'S HAND SCORING SYSTEM:
TOMMY'S POKER PARLOR GIVES A NUMERICAL SCORE TO EACH HAND, THE HIGHER THE
SCORE THE BETTER (MORE RARE) THE HAND. THE HANDS AND THEIR SCORES ARE AS
FOLLOWS:
FIVE OF A KIND 30000+100*C5
STRAIGHT FLUSH 25000+CH
FOUR OF A KIND 20000+100*CX
FULL HOUSE 15000+100*C3+C2
FLUSH 10000+CH
STRAIGHT 9000+CH
THREE OF A KIND 7000+100*C3
2 PAIRS 2000+100*CP1+CP2
1 PAIR 100*C2
BUST HAND 0
NOTE THAT C5 IS THE RANK OF THE QUINTUPLET IN A 5-OF-A-KIND HAND; CH IS
THE HIGHEST-RANKING CARD IN THE HAND; CX IS THE SPARE CARD IN A 4-OF-A-KIND
HAND; C3 IS THE RANK OF THE 3-OF-A-KIND CARD; C2 IS THE RANK OF A
2-OF-A-KIND CARD; CP1 IS THE RANK OF THE FIRST PAIR IN A 2-PAIR HAND;
CP2 IS THE RANK OF THE 2ND PAIR IN A 2-PAIR HAND.
NOTE ALSO THAT THE RANKS OF THE CARDS ARE ACE=14, KING=13, ..., DEUCE=2.
(N.B.: IN AN ACE-LOW STRAIGHT, THE "HIGHEST-RANKING CARD" CH WILL
BE THE ONE YOU THINK, NOT THE ACE.)
EXAMPLES:
A-A-A-A-A 30000+100*14=31400 (5 A'S - HIGHEST HAND)
9-9-9-9-K 20000+100*13=21300 (4 NINES)
7-7-7-4-4 15000+100*7+4=15704 (FULL HOUSE 7,4)
A-K-Q-J-10 9000+14=9014 (ACE-HIGH STRAIGHT)
9-8-7-6-5 9000+9=9009 (9-HIGH STRAIGHT)
5-4-3-2-A 9000+5=9005 (5-HIGH STRAIGHT)
K-K-K-5-3 7000+100*13=8300 (3 KINGS)
A-A-3-3-2 2000+100*14+3=3403 (2 PAIRS A,3)
A-K-9-6-4 0 (BUST HAND)
BREAKING TIES:
TO BREAK TIES AMONG HANDS OF EQUAL SCORES, COMPARE THE "SPARE" CARDS (I.E.,
THE CARDS NOT USED TO MAKE THE ESSENTIAL COMBINATION) CARD-BY-CARD UNTIL
THE TIE IS BROKEN. FOR EXAMPLE:
HAND 1 HAND 2
3-3-3-A-5-2 3-3-3-A-6-2
SCORE=7000+100*3=7300 SCORE=7000+100*3=7300
TIE BREAKER: 6 BEATS 2
WINNER: HAND 2
10-8-7-4-2 10-6-5-3-2
SCORE=0 (BUST HAND) SCORE=0 (BUST HAND)
TIE BREAKER: 8 BEATS 6
WINNER: HAND 1
NOTE THAT TOMMY'S POKER PARLOR PRINTS THE SCORE AND TIE BREAKER CARDS OF YOUR
HAND RIGHT BELOW THE HAND.
SPLITTING THE POT ON TIES:
WHEN TWO OR MORE PLAYERS HAVE IDENTICAL HANDS, THE SPOT IS SPLIT EVENLY
BETWEEN THEM; ANY ODD CHIPS ARE AWARDED BY LOT.
ANTE:
IN SOME TYPES OF POKER, EACH PLAYER MUST CONTRIBUTE A CERTAIN NUMBER OF CHIPS
BEFORE PLAY BEGINS. THUS, EVEN IF YOU DROP IN THE INITIAL BETTING ROUND, IT
COST YOU SOMETHING TO PLAY.
BETTING:
USUALLY, THE POT MUST FIRST BE OPENED BY SOME PLAYER. THIS IS DONE BY ADDING
SOME CHIPS TO IT. THE NEXT PLAYER MAY THEN CALL (ADD THE SAME NUMBER OF
CHIPS), DROP (OUT OF THE GAME), OR RAISE (ADD A FEW MORE CHIPS THAN THE LAST
PLAYER DID). IN OTHER WORDS, THERE IS A STANDING WAGER THAT EACH PLAYER MUST
MEET TO STAY IN THE POT, BUT A PLAYER MAY RAISE THIS WAGER IF DESIRED. THIS
GOES ON IN ROTATION AMONG THE PLAYERS UNTIL ALL BUT ONE HAVE DROPPED OUT (THE
REMAINING PLAYER TAKES THE POT), OR UNTIL ALL PLAYERS HAVE CONTRIBUTED EXACTLY
THE SAME NUMBER OF CHIPS TO THE POT (BETS ARE EQUALIZED).
IF A PLAYER HAS NO CHIPS LEFT, AND MUST CALL TO STAY IN THE GAME, HE DROPS
INSTEAD.
TOMMY'S POKER PARLOR DISPLAYS THE NUMBER OF CHIPS YOU NEED TO CALL AS WELL AS
THE MAXIMUM RAISE MADE SO FAR; OF COURSE, TO CALL YOU ONLY NEED TO GIVE THE
COMMAND AND THE COMPUTER CONTRIBUTES THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF CHIPS
AUTOMATICALLY FOR YOU.
JACKPOT OPTION:
TO SAFEGUARD AGAINST A BUST HAND WINNING A HUGE POT IN DRAW POKER AND SPIT
IN THE OCEAN YOU CAN ENABLE THE JACKPOT OPTION WHICH MAKES IT MANDATORY TO
AT LEAST HAVE A PAIR OF JACKS (SCORE>=1100) TO OPEN THE POT. THE COMPUTER
AUTOMATICALLY "PEEKS" AT THE HANDS AND GIVES THE FIRST PLAYER FROM THE LEFT
WHO HOLDS A GOOD ENOUGH HAND THE OPTION OF OPENING THE POT.
SHOWDOWN:
AFTER THE BETTING IS COMPLETE, THE PLAYERS STILL ACTIVE SHOW THEIR HANDS
AND THE WINNER TAKES ALL. NOTE THAT IF ALL PLAYERS BUT ONE HAVE DROPPED,
THE WINNER NEED NOT SHOW HIS HAND AT ALL.
RULES OF THE GAMES:
0. COLD HANDS. EACH PLAYER ANTES, THEN FIVE CARDS ARE DEALT AND
HIGH HAND WINS (A GAME OF PURE LUCK).
1. DRAW POKER. EACH PLAYER ANTES, THEN FIVE CARDS ARE DEALT FACE
DOWN, THEN A ROUND OF BETTING, THEN DISCARDS AND REPLACEMENTS
FROM THE DECK (UP TO 5 IF THERE ARE <6 PLAYERS, ELSE UP TO 3),
THEN ANOTHER ROUND OF BETTING, THEN THE SHOWDOWN.
NOTE: IN THE FIRST ROUND OF BETTING, EACH PLAYER STARTING WITH
YOU CAN EITHER OPEN THE POT WITH A RAISE, OR CHECK (PASS THE
RIGHT TO OPEN THE POT TO THE NEXT PLAYER). IF THAT PLAYER DECLINES
TO OPEN THE POT, HE MAY PASS INSTEAD TO THE NEXT PLAYER ON THE RIGHT.
IF ALL THE PLAYERS CHECK, THE DEAL IS DEAD. ONCE A PLAYER OPENS
THE POT, EACH PLAYER IN TURN MUST DROP, CALL, OR RAISE.
IN SUBSEQUENT BETTING ROUNDS, THE PLAYER WHO LAST OPENED THE
POT BEGINS: THAT PLAYER HAS THE OPTION OF CHECKING, BUT ONCE THE
POT IS OPENED, EACH PLAYER MUST DROP, CALL, OR RAISE.
2. 5-CARD STUD. THERE IS *USUALLY* NO ANTE. EACH PLAYER IS DEALT ONE
FACE DOWN CARD THEN ONE FACE UP CARD: THE FACE DOWN CARD (KNOWN AS
THE HOLE CARD) CAN BE PEEKED AT BY THE PLAYER TO WHOM IT WAS DEALT.
THERE ARE THEN 3 ROUNDS OF BETTING FOLLOWED BY THE DEAL OF ANOTHER
FACE UP CARD. THERE IS A FINAL BETTING ROUND, THEN THE HOLE CARDS
ARE TURNED UP AND THERE IS A SHOWDOWN.
NOTE: IN THE FIRST BETTING ROUND, LEFTMOST HIGHEST CARD SHOWING MUST
BET. THE MAXIMUM FIRST-ROUND BET IS 10 CHIPS.
IN EACH SUCCEEDING BETTING ROUND, THE LEFTMOST HIGHEST HAND SHOWING
HAS THE FIRST RIGHT TO BET, BUT MAY PASS INSTEAD.
NOTE THAT THIS GAME AVERAGES THE LOWEST WINNING HANDS BECAUSE THERE
IS NO DISCARD AND REDRAW. HENCE IF YOU HAVE ANY PAIR OR EVEN A HOLE
CARD THAT IS HIGHER THAN ANY OTHER PLAYER'S UPCARD, YOU MIGHT STAY
IN FOR THE THIRD CARD.
3. SPIT IN THE OCEAN. PLAYED LIKE DRAW POKER EXCEPT THAT EACH PLAYER
RECEIVES 4 CARDS FACE DOWN INSTEAD OF 5. ONE CARD IS THEN DEALT
FACE UP IN THE CENTER OF THE TABLE WHICH BECOMES THE FIFTH CARD
OF EVERY HAND; IN ADDITION, ALL CARDS OF THIS RANK BECOME WILD.
4. WILD WIDOW. THIS IS LIKE SPIT IN THE OCEAN EXCEPT THAT THE
WIDOW DOES NOT BECOME THE 5TH CARD IN EACH HAND (IT IS WILD ONLY).
AFTER A BETTING ROUND, ANOTHER FACE DOWN CARD IS DEALT TO EACH
PLAYER, THEN THERE IS A FINAL BETTING ROUND (NO DISCARDS), THEN THE
SHOWDOWN.
5. SHOTGUN. THIS IS LIKE DRAW POKER, EXCEPT THAT THE BETTING
ROUNDS BEGIN AFTER 3 CARDS ARE DEALT, 4 CARDS ARE DEALT, AND
THE 5TH CARD IS DEALT. THERE IS NO DISCARDING.
BETTING OPTIONS:
WHEN THE PROGRAM FIRST COMES ON, YOU SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING BETTING
OPTIONS:
1. SET LIMIT. YOU SET THE MAXIMUM RAISE AT 1 TO 100 CHIPS.
2. POT LIMIT. THE MAXIMUM RAISE YOU CAN MAKE IS THE AMOUNT ALREADY
IN THE POT.
3. BET THE RAISE. THE MAXIMUM RAISE YOU CAN MAKE IS THE HIGHEST
CONTRIBUTION MADE BY ANY PLAYER TO THE POT AT ONE TIME SO FAR
(INCLUDING THE ANTE).
NOTE THAT IN THE LATTER 2 BETTING OPTIONS, A RELATIVELY RICH (AND LUCKY)
PLAYER CAN FORCE THE POORER PLAYERS TO GO BUST BY HUGE BETS, OR A FOOLHARDY
PLAYER CAN OVERBET AND BE UNABLE TO CALL, THEREBY DROPPING -- SO WATCH IT.
MAX RAISES:
THIS IS THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF TIMES A PLAYER MAY MAKE A RAISE DURING A
BETTING ROUND.
NOTE ON THE POKER.SCR FILE:
EVERYTIME YOU QUIT THE GAME YOUR CUMULATIVE WINNINGS AND THE NUMBER OF
HANDS PLAYED ARE SAVED ON FILE POKER.SCR. IF YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A
HAND, CHIPS THROWN IN THE POT ARE FORFEITED ... YOU ALL REMEMBER THE DEAD
MAN'S HAND? IF YOU WANT TO CLEAR YOUR CUMULATIVE RECORD, JUST ERASE FILE
POKER.SCR.
