TOMMY'S SPADES (C) COPYRIGHT 1988 BY TOMMY'S TOYS
P. O. BOX 11261, DENVER, CO 80211 USA. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
CATALOG #88-107-1A.
INTRODUCTION:
SPADES IS A GAME POPULAR IN THE DENVER COUNTY JAIL, AND FOR THAT MATTER IN
JAILHOUSES ACROSS AMERICA. SIMILAR TO BRIDGE OR WHIST, BUT WITHOUT ALL THE
COMPLEXITY, IT IS PLAYED WITH GREAT RELISH BY GROUPS OF CONS WHO LIKE TO SLAP
THEIR CARDS DOWN HARD ON THE TABLE.
TOMMY'S SPADES INVOKES THE ATMOSPHERE OF A GOOD COUNTY JAIL WITH BLAND FOOD,
ILL-FITTING UNIFORMS, SMOKE-FILLED BUNKS, BLARING TV, AND JAILHOUSE
CAMARADERIE. HAVE FUN!
PLAYERS: 4 PLAY, IN 2 TEAMS (N-S, E-W). IN TOMMY'S SPADES, YOU (THE KEYBOARD)
PLAY SOUTH, THE COMPUTER PLAYS THE OTHER HANDS.
DEALER: FIRST DEALER IS CHOSEN AT RANDOM; THEN DEAL ROTATES CLOCKWISE.
THE DECK: THE STANDARD DECK OF 52, MINUS THE 2 OF DIAMONDS AND THE 2 OF
CLUBS, WITH THE JOKER AND THE EXTRA JOKER ADDED, GIVING 52 CARDS TOTAL.
INITIAL DEAL: 13 CARDS TO EACH PLAYER; UP TO 3 ROUNDS OF 4 CARDS MAY BE DEALT
FACE UP FOR ALL TO SEE. DEAL IS CLOCKWISE STARTING WITH PLAYER TO DEALER'S
LEFT. IF ANY PLAYER RECEIVED A HAND WITH NO SPADES IN IT, OR ANY PLAYER
RECEIVED A HAND WITH ALL SPADES IN IT, THE CARDS ARE DEALT OVER.
NOTE: IF YOU (SOUTH) ARE THE DEALER, AND THE PROGRAM IS NOT IN DEMO MODE, YOU
CAN FORCE ANY GIVEN ROUND (WITHIN THE 3-ROUND LIMIT) OF 4 CARDS TO BE DEALT
FACE UP BY PRESSING THE SPACE BAR.
BOOKS: 13 BOOKS (TRICKS) ARE PLAYED. SPADES ARE ALWAYS TRUMP, WITH ACE HIGH,
BUT THE EXTRA JOKER RANKS ABOVE THE ACE, AND THE JOKER RANKS ABOVE THE
EXTRA JOKER (JOKERS ARE CONSIDERED SPADES).
BIDDING:
EACH PLAYER THEN BIDS ON HOW MANY BOOKS HE THINKS HE CAN TAKE; THIS IS A ONE-
ROUND "MOB" BID: BIDS MAY BE CHANGED AFTER ALL THE PLAYERS HAVE SPOKEN (IN
TOMMY'S SPADES YOU GET 2 CHANCES TO ENTER A BET). OF COURSE THE TEAM BET
(NORTH+SOUTH OR EAST+WEST) IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN THE PLAYING.
*NOTE: WHEN ENTERING THE 2ND OR 3RD BET, YOU NEED TO HIT THE BACKSPACE
KEY FIRST.
PLAY:
WINNER OF A BOOK IS THE HIGHEST TRUMP PLAYED, ELSE, IF NO TRUMPS ARE PLAYED,
THE HIGHEST CARD OF THE SUIT LED. A PLAYER MUST FOLLOW SUIT WHEN ABLE, AND
FAILURE TO DO SO IS A RENEGE, COSTING THE OFFENDING TEAM THAT BOOK PLUS THE
NEXT 2 IT WINS (THE PLUS SCORES GO TO THE OTHER TEAM INSTEAD).
FIRST SPADE LEAD:
NO ONE MAY LEAD A SPADE UNTIL A SPADE HAS BEEN PLAYED.
SCORING:
WHEN A TEAM GOES DOWN (OVERBIDS), IT SCORES MINUS 10 POINTS FOR EACH BOOK BID
BUT NOT MADE.
WHEN A TEAM CARRIES (MAKES ITS BID), IT GETS 10 POINTS FOR EACH BOOK BID AND
MADE.
THE NUMBER OF SANDBAGS OR UNDERBIDS (BOOKS MADE BUT NOT BID) ARE ADDED TO THE
DISPLAYED SCORE (1 POINT EACH), BUT STRICTLY SPEAKING, ARE NOT A PART OF IT.
A TYPICAL SCORE WOULD BE:
N-S E-W
BOOK 1 +51 (5 BID, 6 MADE) -20 (9 BID, 7 MADE)
BOOK 2 -10 (5 BID, 4 MADE) +90 (9 BID, 9 MADE)
BOOK 3 +33 (3 BID, 6 MADE) +34 (3 BID, 7 MADE)
--- ---
+74 TOTAL TO DATE +104 TOTAL TO DATE (EACH TEAM HAS 4 SANDBAGS)
SANDBAGGING: WHEN A TEAM HAS 10 SANDBAGS (TRICKS MADE OVER BID), THEY GO
BACK (LOSE) 100 POINTS; AFTER THAT THEY GO BACK 100 MORE POINTS AFTER ONLY 3
ADDITIONAL SANDBAGS. SINCE THE UNITS DIGIT OF THE SCORE IS THE TOTAL NUMBER
OF SANDBAGS, THIS MAKES IT EASY TO KNOW WHEN YOUR TEAM IS ABOUT TO GO BACK
100.
GAME: FIRST TEAM TO 400 (AFTER DEDUCTING FOR SANDBAGS) WINS THE GAME. IF
BOTH TEAMS REACH AND/OR PASS 400 AT THE SAME TIME, THE WINNER IS THE TEAM
WITH THE HIGHEST SCORE; A DRAW IS POSSIBLE (THE SANDBAG DIGIT IS NOT INCLUDED
IN THE COMPARISON).
TO PLAY A CARD FROM THE KEYBOARD:
JUST NAME THE CARD WITH 2 CHARACTERS, E.G., 3H (3 OF HEARTS), 3C (3 OF CLUBS),
3D (3 OF DIAMONDS), 3S (3 OF SPADES), TC (TEN OF CLUBS), JH (JACK OF HEARTS),
AS (ACE OF SPADES), JO (JOKER), EJ (EXTRA JOKER); THEN HIT <ENTER>.
OR, USE THE LEFT AND RIGHT ARROW KEYS ON THE NUMERIC KEY PAD TO POINT TO THE
DESIRED CARD, THEN HIT <ENTER>.
OPEN HANDS OPTION:
OPEN HANDS MEANS THAT YOU CAN SEE THE OTHER PLAYERS' HANDS, BUT THEY CAN'T
SEE YOURS; USE THIS OPTION TO IMPROVE YOUR GAME.
GAME LOG:
A LOG OF THE NUMBER OF GAMES WON, AND TOTAL POINTS SCORED BY N-S & E-W IS KEPT
AUTOMATICALLY BY THE COMPUTER ON FILE SPADES.SCR. TO CLEAR THE LOG, JUST ERASE
THAT FILE.

SPEED CONTROL: THE UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS (ON THE NUMERIC KEY PAD) CONTROL
THE TIME THE 'WINNER' ARROW (POINTING TO THE WINNING CARD) IS ON THE SCREEN.
THE VALUE OF THIS DELAY, IN SECONDS, IS DISPLAYED ON THE R.H.S. OF THE
BOTTOM LINE OF THE SCREEN.
A FEW NOTES ON STRATEGY:
1. SINCE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF BOOKS THAT CAN BE WON IN EACH DEAL IS 13,
AN "AVERAGE" HAND WILL BE ABLE TO WIN 13/4=3 BOOKS, AND SO THAT SHOULD
BE YOUR AVERAGE BET.
2. THE HIGHEST UNPLAYED SPADE ALWAYS WINS ITS BOOK, HENCE YOU SHOULD ALWAYS
KEEP TRACK OF THIS DURING PLAY. OBVIOUSLY, A HAND WITH THE JOKER IN IT
HAS 1 BOOK IN THE BAG; AND A HAND WITH JOKER AND EXTRA JOKER HAS 2 BOOKS
IN THE BAG.
3. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE JOKER, BUT ONLY THE EXTRA JOKER, YOU CAN STILL
COUNT ON IT TAKING A BOOK IF YOU HAVE AT LEAST 1 OTHER LOW SPADE TO
"PROTECT" IT (TO BE PLAYED WHEN THE JOKER IS PLAYED). THIS PRINCIPLE
OF PROTECTION WORKS COMPLETELY IN THE SPADE SUIT, SO THAT, FOR EXAMPLE,
JO-EJ-Q-J OF SPADES CAN BE BID AS 4 IF YOU HAVE A LOW SPADE TO PROTECT
THE QUEEN.
4. FOR HEARTS, DIAMONDS, AND CLUBS, NORMALLY ONLY THE ACE AND KING ARE
GOING TO WIN A BOOK, BECAUSE THERE ARE ONLY AN AVERAGE OF 3 OF EACH
OF THESE SUITS IN EACH PLAYER'S HAND, AND MOST LIKELY SOMEBODY WILL
ONLY HAVE 1 OR 2 CARDS OF THAT SUIT, PERMITTING THEM TO PLAY A SPADE
INSTEAD. THUS, YOU CAN BID AN A-Q OF HEARTS AS 2, EVEN WITH A LOW-
RANKING CARD TO SUPPORT THE QUEEN, ONLY IF YOU HAVE NO MORE OR ONLY 1
MORE HEARTS, AND/OR YOU ARE WILLING TO GAMBLE.
5. A SHORT NON-SPADE SUIT (ONLY THE 3 AND 10 OF DIAMONDS, FOR EXAMPLE),
USUALLY ASSURES THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO USE LOW-RANKING SPADES TO WIN
BOOKS AFTER SOMEBODY ELSE (PROBABLY YOUR PARTNER) LEADS THIS SUIT.
HENCE, IF YOU HAVE, FOR EXAMPLE, ONLY 1 DIAMOND, PLUS YOU HAVE A 10 OF
SPADES AND A 6 OF SPADES, YOU CAN OFTEN BET 2 BOOKS BASED ON THOSE 2
SPADES. AND DURING PLAY, IF YOU LEAD AN ACE OF HEARTS, AND YOUR
PARTNER PLAYS THE QUEEN OF HEARTS (WHICH SEEMS STUPID BECAUSE YOU HAVE
ALREADY WON THE BOOK), THIS PROBABLY MEANS THAT HE IS NOW OUT OF HEARTS,
THUS YOU CAN LEAD A LOW HEART NEXT TIME AND HE WILL PROBABLY TRUMP AND
WIN THE BOOK.
6. WHEN LEADING, YOU SHOULD CONSIDER THE OPTION OF LEADING A LOW CARD IF
IT IS THE LAST CARD OF THAT (NON-SPADE) SUIT LEFT IN YOUR HAND; NOW
YOU ARE READY TO TRUMP WITH SPADES IF THAT SUIT IS LED BY ANYBODY ELSE.
7. WHEN YOU ARE NEAR GAME (400 PTS.), YOU SHOULD LOWER YOUR BET TO AVOID
OVERBIDDING, BUT ONLY WHEN SANDBAGS PERMIT: IF YOU REACH YOUR SANDBAG
LIMIT, YOU GO DOWN 100 AND ARE NO LONGER NEAR GAME.
8. WHEN YOU ARE NEAR YOUR SANDBAG LIMIT, AND HAVE WON ALL THE BOOKS YOU
BID, YOU SUDDENLY MIGHT HAVE TO PLAY TO *LOSE* THE REMAINING BOOKS; SO
DON'T BLINDLY TRY TO WIN EVERY BOOK OR YOUR COMPUTER PARTNER MIGHT ZAP
YOU WITH A RAY BEAM.
