Introduction 2
Welcome to Prediction Manager -- Pro Football Edition (PredMan)! Since
the 1978 Pro Football League (PFL) season, I have been playing this game with my
brothers and friends. You might say that it has become a tradition for us and
has become a great way to make new friends. Since we enjoy it so much, it is
only fair that I provide this game for the rest of you football fans to enjoy.
The premise of the game is that you and up to 14 of your friends can
match your skills in predicting the outcome of the PFL games. Some popular
game formats that you find in newspapers and office games base them on
predicting the games once a week. PredMan provides a greater challenge by
having each member predict the outcome of every single game of the season BEFORE
the regular season starts. Also, each member will predict which teams are going
to win their divisions and which teams will also make the playoffs before the
start of the season. At first, this seems like an impossible task, but once you
try this game, you'll understand why it is challenging and fun. This format
provides no advantage or disadvantage to anyone. This allows each member to
rely on their knowledge of each team. They can analyze the draft choices and
trades each team makes, and even see how they perform during the pre-season
games. Also, this can put to the test the loyalty each member has for their
favorite team. With the week-by-week format of other games, the leader relies
on predicting the following week's favored teams, forcing everybody else to
predict the long-shots to try to catch up and therefore acquire an advantage.
With PredMan, once every member turns in their predictions, there is no
changing. This allows the possibility of catching up or losing leads much
easier, thus making it more exciting. The league member(s) who win the Season
Event are declared the champion prognosticator. The league member(s) who
accumulate the most points are declared the PredMan champion. The league can
implement any combinations of EVENTS and points awarded based on the EVENTS they
agree to participate in. (EVENTS discussed in pages' 7, 10 - 13) Also, PredMan
will simultaneously allow you to keep up with the PFL standings. PredMan will
prove to be just what was missing to satisfy your football appetite.
Getting Started 3
1. Requirements:
* IBM compatible 386 or higher
* Windows 3.1+
* At least 2.5 MB of hard drive space
* 580 Kilobytes of RAM memory
2. Installation:
* Place SETUP diskette in drive (A or B, whichever applies).
* From Windows, open the File Menu and choose Run.
* Type: A:setup or b:setup (whichever applies).
3. Default Conditions and Data:
* PredMan will contain the 1994 PFL schedule and schedule
information on file. (Registered version will contain the
upcoming year's PFL schedule as soon as it becomes available.)
* File "SCHEDULE.DAT" contains the PFL schedule.
* File "PFL.DAT" contains the schedule information.
* File "EVENTS.DAT" contains the default event profiles.
* File "RESULTS.DAT" contains season results. (PredMan will
create this file after season starts)
* File "MEMBERS.DAT" contains the names of each league member.
(PredMan will create this file once you establish and enter
your league member's names)
* Files "<membername>.PRD" will contain each member's predictions.
(PredMan will create this file when you choose to save the
predictions)
4. Establishing Your Predictions League:
* Enter every member's name using the League->Members menu item.
* Establish a member of your league as the administrator.
* The administrator will print and distribute the schedule/entry
form to each of the members. If there is no schedule on file,
you need to either create or order one.
* Get together all the members and agree on all the profiles for
each EVENT. EVENTS discussed and explained in pages' 7, 10-13.
* Have each member fill in the entry form or enter their
predictions with PredMan using the League->Predictions menu item
that will produce a prediction file named "<member name>.PRD". Provide the form or the file to the administrator.
* Establish a deadline for every member to turn in their
predictions to the administrator. (One full week before the
beginning of the regular season is recommended. This is due
to fairness and to allow time for the administrator to set up
the league and compile every member's predictions and provide
the league members a compiled printout listing of every member's
predictions)
* Once every member has the listing of everybody's predictions,
then all you need to do is sit back and enjoy every game. Even
the games you normally would not watch, may contain enough
importance that you may actually look forward to them.
Note: You can adapt the game to follow any PFL you want by changing
the names of the teams and by creating the schedule
corresponding to the league of your choice. Create the
schedule using the League->Information and Schedule->Create
windows (See below for details on each window).
5. Rules: 4
* No changes to the predictions allowed once the season has
started unless it was an administrator's mistake. (Each member
should keep a copy of their original predictions as proof of
administrator's mistake)
* New members not allowed once the season starts.
* Ties not allowed as predictions.
* A tie counts as a loss.
* If the PFL reschedules a game to another week for any reason,
then the administrator has to change the schedule and each
member's data accordingly and redistribute the data. The
predictions made by each member on the rescheduled game(s)
cannot be changed. (EX: New England @ Miami was moved to a
later date due to a hurricane.) This rule is only suggested.
Your league can apply any rule for this situation.
* If the PFL decides to switch home sites among any 2 teams, the
predictions remain the same. (EX: Atlanta @ Los Angeles switch
home site dates due to a baseball conflict.)
This rule is only suggested. Your league can apply any rule for
this situation.
* The same team cannot be predicted as both the divisional
champions and as other playoff team.
* Each league member must have a unique name for at least the
first 8 characters of their names. Also, the first 3 characters
must also be unique. This is to have unique prediction (.PRD)
files and to easily distinguish abbreviated names.
* If there is a strike, the league members must decide whether to
count any unplayed games as ties, wins, or losses, or to
continue the game altogether. The same applies if replacement
players play the games.

Season Schedule/Create Schedule Window 16
Use this window to either view and/or edit the current schedule or
create a new season schedule. CAUTION! Editing the schedule has to be done with
caution. Any changes to the schedule may require any or all member's
predictions to be re-done.
* Editing the Schedule
Basically, you should only edit the schedule if you have not
finished entering all the games or to correct errors.
Description on how to edit the schedule will be in the Creating
A Schedule section.
* Creating A Schedule
To create a schedule, you must first get familiar with the
different sections of this Window. This window has 5 major
sections:
1. Team section
2. Swap section
3. Away At Home section
4. Schedule Status section
5. Scheduled Teams/Bye Week Teams option
The Team section has the abbreviated names of all the teams that
currently exist in the PFL league. When the team is "locked," it appears in an
inset field. When the team is "free," it appears in a raised field. When the
team is scheduled as a bye week team, it will appear in a flat field. By
dragging the mouse over the team name, the full name appears in the Key box on
the bottom left of the window. Clicking a "locked" or "free" team toggles the
lock state of the team. If "Entering bye week teams" option is set, clicking
on a "locked" or "free" team sets it to a bye lock state. ("Locked" means
already scheduled for that week. "Free" means not yet scheduled for that week)
The Swap section is used to move games around. This is available so if
desired you can arrange the games in chronological order or by team preference
or any other desired arrangement. For example, you may want to place any
Thursday, Friday, or Saturday games first, all Sunday games next and the Monday
Night game last. CAUTION! Make sure all bye week games are the last entries.
The Away At Home section is where the scheduled games appear. This
section has a highlighted or focused field. This field is where the team you
click on in the Team section is placed at. After clicking on at team, the
focused field will change to the next available spot.
The Schedule Status section is used to monitor how each team has been
scheduled and to help determines which way the teams were scheduled in error.
This section displays the abbreviated team name, the current number of away
games, the current number of home games, and the current number of bye weeks.
Once all the games are scheduled, each team should have the same number of away
games, home games, and number of bye weeks.
The Scheduled Teams/Bye Week Teams option is used to switch from
entering actual scheduled teams and bye week teams. Setting the option to:
Entering scheduled teams will cause any team chosen to be scheduled as a
scheduled team. Setting the option to: Entering bye week teams will cause any
team chosen to be scheduled as a "bye week" team.
17
To start creating a schedule you must know and set the following:
a) You need the PFL schedule (from any source containing the schedule).
b) Set the year of the schedule.
c) Set the number of weeks in the schedule.
Once the above settings are done, start scheduling using the following
steps:
1. Set the Teams option to "Entering scheduled teams."
2. Click on the "away" team of current game in the Team section.
3. Click on the "home" team of current game in the Team section.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all scheduled games are entered.
5. If there are teams left "free," that means that those teams have a
bye week. If so, then set the Teams option to "Entering bye week
teams."
6. Click on the teams that were left free. They appear in the Away at
Home section as a non-scheduled entry.
7. If desired, you can use the Swap section to place the games in any
order (I.e., the Monday night game as the last scheduled game). To
swap games just click on the 2 game buttons and click on the SWAP
button. The SWAP button appears after both games are chosen.
8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 for every week of the season.
9. Click on the VERIFY button. This checks if each team has the same
number of away and home games along with the number of bye weeks.
If there is discrepancy, an error message appears on the box in the
Schedule Status section. The error contains the name of the team
that has a discrepancy. Otherwise it shows a "Success" message.
Click on the SAVE button. This save the schedule or the portion you
have.

League Standings Window
Use this window to display your league's standings based on how each
member has predicted the games. It lists them descending order based on the
season event's win-loss record. This window displays the following information:
1. The "Member" field displays the names of each member in descending
order based on their season event's win-loss record. Also, this
field displays each member's "Pre-Season Odds" on winning the season.
The odds are determined based on the relative comparison between each
of the member's predictions. If the member's name is highlighted
(white on red), that means that the member has won an event(s).
2. The "Season" field displays the up-to-week win-loss record for the
Season event, winning percentage, games behind 1st place, and an
"e/t" flag. The "e/t" flag means that if an "e" appears on the box,
the member has been mathematically eliminated from winning the event.
If a "t" appears, then the member can only tie the event. If nothing
appears, then the member still has a chance of winning the event.
The GB points represent the total number of games behind from each
member multiplied by the number of points per game behind. If both
the Season Event points and the Season Games Behind points were set
to 0, then this field will not appear. If a field is highlighted,
that means that the member has won that event.
3. The "Quarter/Half" field displays the same as the "Season" field
except for either the Quarter event or the Half (Semi-Season) event.
Show the Quarter event by clicking on the QTR button. Show the Half
event by clicking on the HALF button. If either event has both the
events points and the GB points set to 0, the field will not be
available to view. Note that the records for these events will not
be placed in order for the event but rather placed in order of the
Season event. The GB points represent the total number of games
behind from each member multiplied by the number of points per game
behind. If the fields are highlighted, that means that the member
has won the event.
4. The "Week" field displays the win-loss record for the week. If the
fields are highlighted, means the member has won either the GOOD WEEK
event, the BAD WEEK event, and/or the PERFECT WEEK event.
5. The "Points" field displays the up-to-week points accumulated or lost
for each member.
6. The "Wild Choice" field displays the up-to-week wins, losses, number
of Wild Choices left, the "e/t" field, and the to-week maximum. You
can choose the member you want to look at.
7. The "Over 50% In A Row" field displays the up-to-week streak, a flag
signifying if the member holds the current longest streak, the "e/t"
flag, and the current longest streak. You can choose the member you
want to look at.
8. The "Differences" field allows you to display the up-to-week
differences left between any two members. You can view the number
of differences for the rest of the season, quarter, half, and the
following week. You can choose the members you want to compare.
Compare Differences Window 22
Use this window to display a week-by-week detail of differences between
the league members. You can click on the member's name of your choice to make
that member the point of reference. If the name of the team appears under a
member's name, it means that the member has that team different from the
reference member.
Compare Results Window
Use this window to display a detailed of comparison of game results
between the league members. You can click on the member's name of your choice
to make that member the point of reference. If the name of the team appears
under a member's name, it means the member correctly predicted the team to win.
League Statistics Window
Use this window to display a detailed breakdown on how each member
predicted the teams, the PFL results and other miscellaneous information. You
can choose the member or the PFL league and division to view. The following
information can be viewed (either as predictions or actual PFL results):
1. Team's overall win-loss record.
2. Team's record within the teams conference.
3. Team's record outside the teams conference.
4. Team's record within the teams division.
5. Team's record outside the teams division.
6. Team's record on the road.
7. Team's record at home.
8. Total Road vs. Home records.
9. Total Conference A vs. Conference B records.
10. Prediction percentages which describes how your league as a whole
has predicted the games.
Prediction Charts Window
Use this window to display each member's predictions, a consensus, and
the actual PFL league results in a standing's chart. This allows you to
compare, at a glance, how your predictions compare to the actual PFL standings.
PFL Team Ratings Window
Use this window to display a rating chart of the PFL teams. The rating
system used has no scientifically derived formula but rather is just based on a
simple system that is described on the lower part of the window. This
information can be used to compare, at a glance, the relative strength of all
the teams, divisions, and conferences.
Scouting Report Window
Use this window to display a team by team scouting report. This report
will show how each member has successfully predicted each of the teams. The way
this is done is that if a member successfully predicted a team to win a game,
that means the member also predicted the losing team to lose and thus a correct
prediction for each team.
Ledger Window
Use this window to display a points ledger for each event by each member
It shows how many points were won or lost for each event for each member.
