Herbaceous plant Aconitum napellus of the
buttercup family, with hooded blue-mauve
flowers, commonly known as monkshood. It
produces aconitine, a powerful alkaloid with
narcotic and analgesic properties. There are
about 100 species of the genus Aconitum
throughout the N temperate regions, all of
which contain poison. Winter aconite Eranthus
hyemalis also belongs to the buttercup
family, but has yellow
buttercup-like flowers with six petals and a
ruff of leaves below.
