Emperor of Japan from 1989, succeeding his
father Hirohito (Showa). His reign is called
the Heisei (`achievement of universal peace')
era. Unlike previous crown princes, Akihito
was educated alongside commoners at the elite
Gakushuin school and in 1959 he married
Michiko Shoda (1934-), the daughter of a
flour-company president. Their three
children, the Oxford university-educated
Crown Prince Hiro, Prince Aya, and Princess
Nori, were raised at Akihito's home instead
of being reared by tutors and chamberlains in
a separate imperial dormitory.
