  1. Drug prescribed for the treatment of gout; it
  2. is an isomer of hypexanthine C5H4N4O, and
  3. acts by reducing levels of uric acid in the
  4. blood. Discovered accidentally in the early
  5. 1960s in the search for new
  6. immunosuppressives, it has no effects on
  7. acute gout attacks, and may even provoke them
  8. in the initial stages of therapy. In the long
  9. term, it prevents the deposit of urate in the
  10. joints and the formation of uric-acid kidney
  11. stones.
