Dental formula is a way of showing what an
animal's teeth are like. The dental formula
consists of eight numbers separated by a line
into two rows. The four above the line
represent the teeth in one side of the upper
jaw, starting at the front. If this reads
2 1 2 3 (as for humans) it means two
incisors, one canine, two premolars, and
three molars. The numbers below the line
represent the lower jaw. The total number of
teeth can be calculated by adding up all the
numbers and multiplying by two.
