  2. South Platte river, near the foothills of the
  3. Rocky mountains; population (1980) 492,365,
  4. Denver-Boulder metropolitan area 1,850,000.
  5. It is a processing and distribution centre
  6. for a large agricultural area and for natural
  7. resources (minerals, oil, gas). It was the
  8. centre of a gold and silver boom in the 1870s
  9. and 1880s, and for oil in the 1970s. Denver
  10. was founded 1858 with the discovery of gold,
  11. becoming a mining-camp supply centre; coal is
  12. also mined nearby. There is a university, a
  13. mining school, many medical institutions, and
  14. the US mint.
