  1. Member of a Christian sect of Russian origin,
  2. now mainly found in Canada, also known as
  3. `Christians of the Universal Brotherhood'.
  4. Some of the Doukhobor teachings resemble
  5. those of the Quakers. They were long
  6. persecuted, mainly for refusing military
  7. service - the writer Tolstoy organized a
  8. relief fund for them - but in 1898 were
  9. permitted to emigrate and settled in Canada,
  10. where they number about 13,000, mainly in
  11. British Columbia and Saskatchewan. An
  12. extremist group, `the Sons of Freedom',
  13. staged demonstrations and guerrilla acts in
  14. the 1960s, leading to the imprisonment of
  15. about 100 of them.
