The duck is a webbed footed water BIRD and is
related to the SWAN and the GOOSE. Ducks look
rather like small geese with short necks.
The two main groups are dabbling ducks and
diving ducks. Dabbling ducks feed at the
surface of the water, but they do not dive.
Dabbling ducks include the mallards that swim
on pools and rivers in the nothern half of the
World. Farmyard ducks were bred from mallards.
Diving ducks dive completly underwater in
their hunt for food. Most diving ducks live
out at sea. These ducks include the eider
duck, from which we get eiderdown.
Ducks are hunted and bred for their meat,
eggs and feathers.
Duck refers to the female, and the male is
known as the drake.
