Fatwa in Islamic law, is an authoritative
legal opinion on a point of doctrine. In 1989
a fatwa calling for the death of English
novelist Salman Rushdie was made by the
Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran, following
publication of Rushdie's controversial and
allegedly blasphemous book The Satanic
Verses.
