Plant of the genus Scrophularia. A perennial
herb, it has square stems, opposite leaves,
and open two-lipped flowers in a cluster at
the top of the stem. The common figwort
Scrophularia nodosa is found across Europe
and N Asia, growing in damp woods and by
hedges. It is up to 80 cm/2.6 ft long, with
small reddish-brown flowers in late summer,
and is pollinated by wasps.
