  1. Plant of the genus Scrophularia. A perennial
  2. herb, it has square stems, opposite leaves,
  3. and open two-lipped flowers in a cluster at
  4. the top of the stem. The common figwort
  5. Scrophularia nodosa is found across Europe
  6. and N Asia, growing in damp woods and by
  7. hedges. It is up to 80 cm/2.6 ft long, with
  8. small reddish-brown flowers in late summer,
  9. and is pollinated by wasps.
