In Greek mythology, the Erinyes, appeasingly
called the Eumenides, (`kindly ones'). They
were the daughters of Earth or of Night,
represented as winged maidens with serpents
twisted in their hair. They punished such
crimes as filial disobedience, murder, and
inhospitality.
